T42 battery health questions

#1 Post by silo » Mon May 14, 2007 11:31 pm

My new used T42 has a battery cycle count of 24. The Thinkpad Configuration says the health is good. However, while the battery information says the design capacity is 47.52 Wh., the Status Detail says full charge capacity is only 38.51 Wh.

Do I need to do deep discharge etc? Or is this some other issue?

I would never try a deep discharge on a lithium-ion battery. A discharge-charge cycle will correct a problem related with fuel gauge accuracy (this behaviour is known as `digital memory'); however, this cycle will short battery life.

For lithium-based batteries I would suggest partial discharges. Three conditions that can damage a lithium-ion battery are (1) very low charge, (2) very high charge, and (3) high temperature. Try avoiding two of these conditions happening concurrently (e.g., a full charge is good if you will use the battery soon, but never leave a fully charged battery on a hot environment). Try avoiding condition (1) if possible.
