T42 - fan error, need some help please!
Can someone please tell me how to open up my laptop to replace this fan? I don't have my manual with me so I'm not sure how to do it. My laptop has been having overheating issues and today it simply would not start up, and just gives me the fan error display.
Also, is it possible for me to find this fan at a local store? (13R2657) Like bestbuy or something. I am leaving for Europe in 2 days and it is a disaster for me not to have my laptop working before I leave on this trip, so hopefully there is some place in Houston where I can pick up this fan on a Sunday! Thanks

First of all you should download the Hardware Maintenance Manual. For easy reference just unscrew the "3" and "4" screws on the bottom of your laptop. Then turn the laptop, remove the keyboard, and try applying pressure on the fan connector to the motherboard. You can then plug the machine to AC power as it is (disassembled). You could probably manage to get the machine to boot again without the Fan Error display.
The overheating is caused by dust and blocked exhaust on the fan. If you manage to get the machine running remove the fan and blow some compressed air if you have. If you don't leave this to later and get a decent thermal grease (like Shin Etsu X23) the best thermal grease

When I press the power button, the fan does not turn... is the fan supposed to turn immediately after I press the power button? Please advise.

Yes, the fan should be activated and spin quite fast when you POWER ON the machine. Did you try putting pressure on the fan connector that goes to the motherboard before Pressing the ON button as I adviced?

Yes, I believe I pressed it down. It was the connector above the heatsink/fan right? It still doesn't work =(xtr wrote:Yes, the fan should be activated and spin quite fast when you POWER ON the machine.
