Help! Why is my T23 disk so slow?

#1 Post by awolfe63 » Sun May 23, 2004 10:32 pm

I have a T23 (2647-5RU) that should have a reasonably fast disk. It is supposedly a 60GB/5400RPM drive with a decent transfer speed. (IBM Travelstar 60GH)

1.2GHz PIII
512MB
Win2K - NTFS

Sandra reports only about 8MB/s transfer rate.

Any insights as to why it is so slow?

Is DMA mode enabled (check in the IDE controller properties in the Device Manager)? I seem to recall Windows 2000 defaulting to PIO mode only, but I may be wrong.

Yes - Ultra 5.

After clearing out old files and a full defrag - I get 9MB/s. Only 3.5MB/s for random reads/writes.

Andrew,

Sounds like something is running in the background and eating read/write cycles.

Run Spybot S&D and AdAware on your system and see what they report.

Are you using Norton for Antivirus? If so, which version?

I'll do that - but I didn't see anything in the process table.

I'm running Norton 2003 - fully updated - but I had it disabled for the test.

Don't just disable Norton, shut it and any associated processes down entirely and then run the tests again.

Norton 2003 has something akin to the old and venomous "FindFast" of early M$Office days. I'm sorry that I can't recall what it's called as I don't use Norton for anything.

T21- Can't get XP (or anything) to load.

#7 Post by Brillig » Tue May 31, 2005 12:27 pm

Got a T21 p3 800 128 off ebay this weekend. It ran fine for about 10 mins then froze. After the hard reboot, XP would hang during load. In safe mode, it wold hang at agp440, then after I disabled it in listsvc, it froze on mup. I decided a full reload was in order (I bought it to put Suse 9.3). Now, I can't load a thing on it. Chkdsk says the hdd is okay, but it freezes w/ 36 min left in install. I figured I'd just go with SuSe, but I get a warning that DMA is off and it will be slow. I thought I'd try to ride it out, but after ab hour or so I gave up. It was still loading hardware drivers, but the hdd led had not flashed at in the times I watched it. Is there a non OS specific diagnostic tool? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brillig
