T41 Upgrade Question

#1 Post by Mortalbard » Sat Oct 09, 2004 6:59 am

Hello fellow Thinkpad aficionados. I have a potentially pointless question about a T41 I’m considering buying, and I need to put my mind at ease about it. The Thinkpad I’m eying is a brand new T41 2373-3HU that has been upgraded by IBM to a 2373-9U5. The upgrade consists of an IBM wireless a/b/g MPCI card and a Bluetooth transceiver.

Since the seller is offering this computer for $1700, which is about $200-300 less than what a comparable T41 with original a/b/g and Bluetooth capability might fetch, I’m wondering if there’s something I should know about this upgraded model. What I’m saying is that I want the a/b/g wireless and the Bluetooth to perform exactly as they would on a T41 that included them right from the start. Am I drawing a fictitious distinction between the upgraded and spec T41, or is there in fact a physical and/or functional difference?

I apologize for what may be an idiotic question, but I can’t whip out my credit card until this little matter is settled in my head. The perfectionists among you will understand this.

One other question: Since I plan to use this machine for relatively simple tasks such as word processing, web surfing and watching the occasional DVD movie, is 32 MB of video RAM adequate?

Thanks very much in advance for your input, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

2373-3HU only has 802.11b wireless. The 2373-9U5 has 802.11g which is about 4 times faster at their max potential. You probably won't notice a difference on browsing internet but when you ever need to transfer files wirelessly through LAN it really helps. 802.11b is outdated considering you are getting a new machine.

Bluetooth ... if you have a bluetooth enabled cell phone or PDA it would be great. The best is that you can use a bluetooth mouse without any wires. It's a nice to have that is not critical to everyone.
