python.exe

#1 Post by Daniel » Sun Oct 10, 2004 11:27 am

What is that program? It seems like it's one of IBM's things because I see it in the IBM folders but it doesn't seem like it serves any purpose. Every once in a while, I notice my system slowing down to a crawl and if I check my task manager, it shows python.exe eating all my CPU time. Other times, it's not even in the task manager. Once I kill the process, the system is fine.

python is a programming language, not sure why the python.exe would be running in the background unless some IBM application needs it, are you using some special IBM app when it runs?

Python is a scripting language, so I think that some IBM program is running a scheduled script written in Python. I would guess maybe backup or something like that.

start up the comp in safe mode, back up the file to another location (renaming it of course) and then delete the original. reboot if all is well then you don't need it. if something goes wrong just boot back into safe mode and copy the backup back into the original location and rename it abck to the original filename

Python is used by Rapid Restore.

It's mentioned a few times in the deployment guide ...

Thanks. I guess it's just Rapid Restore fumbling around

Well, yes it is a part of Rapid Restore. But RR only "fumbles around" if you have intentionally or accidentally set it to run scheduled backup operations. When using RR's automatic/scheduled backups, the program will hog the CPU power. So, check your rr settings and change them so that it does not run automatically.

I'm using a Thinkpad T42 for presentations and thought I'd covered myself for screen pop-ups and slow-downs (closed network, cancelled Windows update, quit firewall and anti-virus) , but the other day - luckily not during a live presentation - a video sequence I was reviewing stuttered and slowed to a slide show. Task manager showed 100% CPU usage with most of this due to Python.exe. I killed it with no apparent harm and the video went back to normal. But now I'm worried myself in case this rears it's ugly head mid presentation (it doesn't show up in Task Manager normally so I can't get rid of it at the start). Earlier posts suggest it's part of auto Rapid Restore, but I have this turned off. Any suggestions of how I can protect against this kicking in? I used to use EndItAll in Win98 days, but don't hear much about it now. I'd be grateful for any suggestions here.
