Can a T40 be a T42?

#1 Post by sagara » Sun May 27, 2007 5:06 pm

Hi, I've been looking on Ebay (UK) for a T42, and been outbid at the last moment on a couple of occasions. To check out warranties, I ask for the machine type and serial no. This T42 is said to be a 2374-CTO, serial no. L3L9156. But when I check this on the IBM website it tells me it's a 'T40 configure-to-order system'. It also says:

Description:
This product has a special bid three year limited warranty. This product is entitled to parts, labor and on-site repair service (9x5 next business day) in approved locations. Thinkpad batteries have a one year warranty.

Elsewhere is says it has a Dothan 1.7 - can a T40 have this cpu as a 'configure-to-order' machine?', anf if so what makes it a T40 and not a T42?

Can someone out there enlighten me on this and save me from bidding on what might be a fiction?

Thanks,

Robert

The biggest difference between T40 and T42 is the bus speed. The T40 uses PC2100 memory, while the T42 uses PC2700 memory. However, when I look up that model and serial numbers, it was sold originally with a T42 motherboard, so it's a T42.

Plus a T40 will have a system board that does not have a motion sensor, therefore, no APS (active protection system) for the hard drive.

Nothing to worry, here, there were multiple 2374 models across all T4x series thinkpads, . The link below confirm this:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... yle=lenovo
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

Yes, this link below does say that it has PC2700 RAM and a Dothan 1.7Ghz cpu.

Does this mean that a T40 body can take a T42 system board (I assume that's a motherboard), and therefore have APS? If so, what is there left to call it a T40? It also has a 'Clymar 802.11 b/g card'. Do we have here a T40 Centrino?

It seems very difficult to find out more about this TP from the IBM/Lenovo site. For example, it does not appear in the System Model Matrix for the T40/p. Is this because it is a 'configure-to order' machine? Does 'configure-to-order imply it's a 'one-off' machine?

The warranty states it is covered up to 2009, and is 'on-site'. And it is an 'education' machine, presumably meaning that it was initially ordered by or through an educational establishment. So if it goes faulty, the engineer will wonder why he's called out to a private home and not a school, etc!

I've just had a message from the seller in response to some questions I asked, and he has just used the 'detect this system' method on the IBM site - it comes up with a 'T42 2374-YJ2'!

Ah! Mystery solved. It is a T42 2374-YJ2 after all, which is 'Based on 2374-CTO'. The model no. the seller gave was 2374-CTO, which is listed as a 'T40 configure-to-order' system!
