HDD exchange between T40 and T42

#1 Post by VladFromMinsk » Wed May 30, 2007 3:10 am

Hello fellows!

Half a year ago i got a T40 2374-mu3 with a new blank 7K100 Hitachi Travelstar HDD. Now i have an opportunity to upgrade to T42 (cannot say the model at the moment, all i know it's 2374 too) 1.7GHz, 7500 32MB video, blank 40GB HDD.
Now the question: is it possible to remove 7K100 (loaded with WIN XP SP2 and tons of software) from T40 and install it into the new T42 without re-installing OS and other software?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my English

Vlad

Yes! It wil work just run software instaled after the first boot to make sure you get all the required drivers.

Thanks! I suppose first I'll remove all specific T40 software downloaded from IBM site and then I'll download a new update patches for T42

Really appreciate and best regards,

Vlad

No don't do that some softwares are the same between the two model. Leave it as is.

Swap drives and connect to the internet and run software installer, that's all you need to do.

So the video will run OK T42 can run off a T40 HDD?

I remember the T40 had Video ATI 7500 if i remember correctly, whereas T42 had ATI 9600 on some of them (like mine)...

ok so well that's weird.. maybe it's just a Vista thing but i tried that from my T41 to my T42 and it tried to boot then gave me the bootmanager error stating i just gotta reinstall from the CD. I'm trying not to do too much of that since i don't want it killing Outlook 2007 which has all my emails. The files are in an OST file so i can't just copy the files from the HD to the new one and open it. I forgot to backup the database which would put them in a PST file that can be shared.

That bootmanager fix wont wipe the whole Windows folder now will it since that would delete some of the Office files and therefore render OST useless even if i reinstalled Office.
