T-40 car charger??

#1 Post by kingman99 » Thu May 31, 2007 9:04 am

HI

In July l will be taking a 12 hour trip by car and thought it would help to pass the time by watching a movie. For passenger use only!!

Can you recommend one, the next time l will be using the charger is maybe next year so l doubt if l will need a top of the line charger.

Thanks

Alan

You don't need a special charger. Any $20 150-Watt DC-to-AC inverter will suffice. Simply plug your existing charger into it. See below for an example:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6882739007

Note: Your existing charger is a "switching" type power supply which does not care about pure sine wave or modified sine wave or much else ... any of these inexpensive DC-to-AC inverters will work as long as the inverter can handle the power requirement, i.e., minimum 75 watts continuous output.
Enjoy your trip!

Four years ago, I bought a 72watt model to power my T600x ( a poor man's ipod * ) while taking long road trips.
I placed the adapter under the pax seat, and ran the wire up between the bottom and back of the seat.
When I stopped for breaks, I un-plugged the power, and placed the laptop (and FM transmitter) under the rear seat for safety.

This has served well with the T600, then a T23, and my current T40.
(thank you IBM for using the same connector!!)
The adapter is now velcro'd under the pax seat.

Advantage: only one device, instead of two (inverter & tp adapter), this means fewer wires.
Dis-advantage: slightly higher cost.
Also, it only works with devices that use the same connector & voltage

And once you buy the inverter, you will find other devices to use in your car.
(a friend bought a cheap ($10 on sale) inverter at Pep Boys and used it to power his laptop, and to recharge his GPS unit.)

* re: "poor man's iPod" . I already owned my ThinkPad... an iPod was $100's more.....
and the 14" screen is SO much easier to see! I use WinAmp with custom key bindings for skip and re-play functions...
no need to look at the key-board.
