Bios flash failure - now unable to Boot

#1 Post by kerrdog » Thu May 31, 2007 12:05 pm

I have a t42 laptop that was flashed, (BIOS), without a battery installed.
Looks like the bios was erased, without new bios installed.
This is not a password problem. The t42 will not boot, F1 to get into bios does not work. No IBM logo - just blank screen.

Any ideas on how to reset or reload bios. A laptop repair shop said they could reload bios with out replacing mother board.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

The BIOS chip has to be desoldered from the mainboard, reprogrammed, and resoldered back on. Here is a service that does it. You'll need to find a repair shop to do it locally in the US, or contact this guy, maybe he'll do US business. 65 Euros is around $87. Not bad but then add shipping.

not to hi-jack the thread but is there any reason why we're supposed to undock before upgrading the BIOS? I have a floppy that attaches to the Port Replicator II that i have and it was the only way to upgrade as the "Non-Diskette" version doesn't work (maybe it's cuz i have Vista).

FYI - i chose to go ahead and do it and it worked :D so i'm happy but for the longest i wanted to upgrade and that was the only way i could. The system had 3.14 and i upgraded to 3.21 as i saw somethings in the release notes that was affecting me.

kerrdog, that's why they specify to have a fully charged battery before flashing. I hope you get it fixed.

SHoTTa35, I think they want it removed from the port replicator so there is less chance of bad hardware interrupting the flash process

Yes a fully charged battery is necessary to flash the bios so it's rather odd that you managed to flash without a battery??
