T40 battery charging problems--systemboard replaced 4 times!

#1 Post by kaiadair99 » Mon Oct 11, 2004 9:18 am

Hello all,

I've enjoyed reading this forum and but have been the frustrated owner of a T40 2373A1U since 2003. While I've been otherwise pleased, I have had to replace the systemboard no fewer than 4 times for a strange recurring battery charging problem.

Typically, the batteries (I have 3, one normal and 2 high capacity) will charge correctly, to 100% capacity while installed in the unit while it's connected to a/c. After perhaps 3-4 months, however, they will no longer charge. Strangely, the systemtray icon reflects that the computer recognizes it is running on A/C (the battery changes to an ac plug) when I plug it in, but the % charge on the battery indicator doesn't budge. This isn't a battery problem since it each of the three batteries exhibits the same behavior.

Whenever this occurs, IBM service simply replaces the systemboard--they are at a loss to explain why this problem repeatedly occurs.

Any thoughts would be appreciated--this seems to be a unique problem as I've not seen reference to this on the board anywhere. Could a bad power supply be culprit?

4 motherboards, thats a little odd. Look at from a different angle, maybe your charger?
