seagate ST9120821A, 2010 error

#1 Post by holr » Tue Jun 05, 2007 8:01 am

I have read a lot about this infamous 2010 error and specifically bought a seagate ST9120821A 120gb as there has been some good feedback on this particular drive. I have recently updated to the latest firmware (1.29) and embedded controller (1.6 i think) but am getting the elusive 2010. Am I missing something, or should I roll back to an older firmware?

thanks

I tried doing the firmware update on the cd. It didnt work (was clutching at straws really, I knew this particular drive isnt officially supported) but it it say the firmware version I had on the drive is 3.06. Can anyone with a working seagate drive of this type confirm what drive firmware they are currently running?

Till then, I have downgraded the bios to 1.02, not the best solution but hey, no more annoying beeps...

thanks, I searched for the drive type ST9120821A on this site and found the following only:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... st9120821a
This just confirms user holyfield has trouble with this drive too.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=101863
User nj_it suggestes (s)he had no problem with the drive, but no mention of hard drive firmware (only bios 1.22)

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 27e7a00279
user ruymbeke suggests (s)he had no problem but no mention of hard drive firmware

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 1a8730b2c1
user ozalby confirms a problem with bios 1.28 and firmware 3.04

Other than further issues by various users in that thread, there isn't much info on this particular seagate drive. Its a shame the drive is listed in the thinkwiki site (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... of_the_box) as working out of the box, when theres more people with problems than working drives.

It also says on the ThinkWiki site right under that list:
ThinkWiki wrote:ATTENTION!
Even drives with identical part numbers may carry firmware with different compatibility status, so do not blindly rely on this list.
You roll your dice and take your chances with non-IBM/Lenovo branded drives when using them in a T43, R52, or X41.
Sorry to hear that you are not finding a solution.

Where did you find updated firmware for your Seagate drive?

I just bought the drive a few dats ago, it's what it came with. Im wondering if a firmware downgrade on the drive would make it work, but I dont know what firmware the lucky users had, nor how to downgrade the hard drive. I did have a little look on seagates website, but the info wasnt very forthcoming, as it says on the hard disk "OEM" and words to the effect of "Have a problem? Contact the vendor, not us!"

Oh, sorry. I misread that as thinking you updated the firmware on your Seagate drive when you meant you updated firmware on the T43.

You can set in BIOS to not require a keypress to continue so that it'll still beep twice, display the error, but will dismiss itself after a second or two.

It would be really easy for someone who knows assembly to hack the BIOS, just find where it does the check that triggers the 2010 error and replace it with a bunch of NOP (No OPeration) instructions. Unfortunately, I guess there aren't very many hacker types that use T43s. I wish there were more brainy people doing useful things like removing 2010 errors than writing spyware and viruses. I wish I were smart enough to do it, but I'm only smart enough to recognize assembly when I see it, not to write/modify any of it.

Maybe on the wim's bios website.
