Applied AS5 on CPU & GPU

#1 Post by ctgilles » Tue Jun 05, 2007 10:22 am

Yesterday I opened up my T43p and applied some Arctic Silver 5 to both CPU and GPU.
I noticed the GPU has a pink thermal pad on it, I wanted to remove it but didn't have a piece of copper of that thickness so I had to leave it on. I did apply some AS5 were the brown stuff used to be (I removed it).
Closed it and let it "sit" overnight. My laptop seems to be running 1~2 degrees cooler when idle and 3 degrees under load.

It did amaze me however that IBM has left the Northbridge uncovered  No wonder that the ambient temp sensor picks up such high temps :?

I was wondering whether there was another cooling modification/alternative for the T43p that can be done. With summer basically already here, I was thinking to get one of those tablets with coolers in to place under the laptop. But a smaller/more mobile solution (internal?) would be more welcome.

In the 100f shop that I work in, I experimented with those cooler tablets. I saw a one degree drop (from 39C to 38C). So for the size and the USB real estate that it takes up, it was not worth it for me. Software is a much better solution (44C to 39C).

Software is better (NHC), in my town ambient temps are 32-33C, my T42p gets pretty hot (CPU temp is 47-50C depending on usage with the fan config to turn on in the 50C mark). If the EC kicks in the fan would ramp to the 3600rpm range. And notice I did also the change of thermal grease. I think the long fan my T42p is not meant to be on it, since is the fan used on T43p (noisy one). Wonder if it really makes a difference.
