Burnt DVDs not working in T43 DVD ROM drive

#1 Post by kidpaprika » Wed Jun 06, 2007 4:57 pm

I recently bought a Samsung Writemaster external USB2 DVD writer. I have burnt a few DVDs and the writer seems to be able to read them perfectly well. I have also been able to play video DVDs in my home DVD player.

However, if I try to read video or data DVDs in my T43 DVD drive, it recognises them as audio CDs!

The T43 is a 2668 W13
The DVD drive model number is GDR-8083n.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

weird, maybe it's just the discs that aren't compatible (odd chance but could be) try burning other discs and see if there's a firmware update for your T43 DVD drive.

I would try the following fix on your T43.

that was the next thing i was going to suggest. Maybe a firmware hack from those rpc guys. I forget the site.... but first try for an official firmware update.

Google Nero InfoTool and run it (small exe) and that'll tell you what types of discs your DVD ROM can read.

Last night I tried to update the firmware using an upgrade from the IBM/Lenovo site.

Unfortunately, the firmware is only available for either writing to a floppy disk (and then using this as a boot disk from which to upgrade) or a CD-ROM ISO image (again, this is used as a boot disk). My T43 doesn't have a floppy drive, and I don't have any blank CDs.

I then found the Dangerous Brothers' RPC1 firmware updates. I checked my drive and it was already at 0K04 firmware, so I flashed it with their 0K04 RPC1 upgrade, and it now appears to be working fine and is able to play my DVD+R discs!

ok glad the Dangerous Brothers thing worked for ya, i just couldn't remember the name at the time. :) You should have probably used the IBM one but oh well, at least now you are RPC FREE!! You can play DVDs from anywhere in the world :)

(which reminds me, i gotta go there to get the one for my girlfriends laptop as she's going back to Germany to study!!)

Dude!

I found this topic, and i knew i had the same DVD-ROM in my TP T40 (also a GDR-8083n)

I installed the IBM update (downloaded the ISO, burned it on my main PC) and installed it, and PRESTO 8) :D

I can read DVD+R now :D

My ThinkPad was never able to do that, but now it can

Thanks dude, if i didn't found your topic, i didn't knew there was such an update.

Thanks!! +1
