Bill, Pricing for 2373KTU

#1 Post by Udayan » Mon May 24, 2004 4:35 pm

I had posted a thread earlier asking you about this machine, but I made a mistake in the model number. If I can pay the full amount by money order or cashiers check (not a guarantee, will depend on your price :D ), how much would the 2373KTU be?

Thanks.

I am also seriously interested in getting a KTU and have already discussed a few options with Bill... IMHO this is the best bang for the bucks machine for those who don't want to sacrifice portability for the larger screen/footprint (I might be getting an external 20" TFT instead :D)

I guess if enough of us order, Bill can probably land us a nice discount

KTU vs KUU

I prefer the KUU because:

The Intel 2200BG card will have 100% open source GPLd drivers. This is good for Linux and much better than the binary hack driver needed for the IBM a/b/g card. See http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/.

Getting 1GB of memory directly from IBM is expensive. The KUU can be upgraded to 1GB by adding a 512MB stick from crucial for $125.

The DVD-RW drive is not very fast at DVD burning (2x), doesn't do +RW media and slower at CDR burning than the combo drive. I burn alot more CDR than DVD-RW and the drive is very pricey option. For now, I'll burn the occasional DVD-RW/+RW on my home system's external USB 2.0 burner at 4x for a fraction of the price.

No, check out the Madwifi drivers if you have an IBM a/b/g card ;)

I'm planning to buy the KTU model too, but I really hope all those planning to get this model group together with me so that Bill can give all of us a nice discount, as csarrasin said. :D :D :D

Exactly! If Bill can give us a great price, I'm for it.

By the way, please don't post replies on this thread that deal with a different model. I'm sure we've all considered the options before choosing this one. The other threads I've seen got clobbered with other stuff. Please use this thread is ONLY for 2373KTU.

Thanks! :D

Unlike so much of the Internet, I know about what I speak.

The Madwifi driver is based on a closed source binary blob that taints the kernel rendering it unsupportable.

The Intel part 2200BG and 2100 has no such limitation (finally!).

See the MADwifi FAQ question v1.2.

EWhy not get a wifi ready model and put a proper cisco card in it?

Once again, please use this thread only for 2373KTU
I understand you're trying to be helpful, but it's really just starting to clog this thread up with things unrelated to the topic. Thanks. :D

That being said, I've noticed the t42's are back on the IBM web site, but model number 2373KTU doesn't seem to be listed. Is this a future model or is it just not listed? If it actually exists, could someone find a price for it?

Thanks.
