access connection/wireless/router - strange behavior

#1 Post by lord jim » Thu Jun 07, 2007 10:09 am

I have paged through articles in this forum, and may be missed what I am looking for but:
after flawless work for few months I'm getting this strange behavior. Connection would have dropped even if AC shows connected, connection status of 2915abg shows 100% and connected, even Skype icon will show connected for some time. I have restarted router, (D-link WBR-1310), at one point it did help quite a bit for some time. What usually do help, I disconnect via AC and immediately connect again, and it works for some time, sometime longer sometime shorter. I was thinking antena connector but I haven’t physically moved machine, and wouldn’t the signal strength go low if it was the antena? I am inclined towards blaming router at that point, any other suggestions?. BTW at one time I exited AC and tried connecting through XP – same thing, so I somehow ruled out AC trouble, I think.
What puzzles me the most is AC and 2915abg shows connected and I can ping IP sucesfully.
Thanks for any suggestions.

If you can ping but cannot move data, consider the router firmware and MTU times. Perhaps the MTU size is wrong (slightly too small). My Wired MTU right now is Windows default at 1400. I use Tweakmaster to determine this. If this value in your PC is wrong, sometimes packets won't move. Then, like I said, consider the router firmware. ... JDH

You may have run across a post of mine where I had a similar problem, had Excellent Connection to router but nothing coming from Internet. Had to do "Repair" every 10 mins or so to get it to work or reboot router, which was also very temporary fix.

At one point I thought it was my router as well because I was able to easily hook up to Hotspots...it was only on my home router that I had the problem.

My problems started after I did my normal "Update" of software. I went to Lenovo site and let it update my T41. After that, I had nothing but trouble...router is Netgear Rangemax 240 and I use Win XP rather than AC but what fixed mine may also work for you.

I finally fixed it on my own by rolling back the wireless driver to 2005 version, which I am still running today without a single problem.

I know it is the driver because I can recreate the problem by simply installing the 2006 driver.

Try rolling back driver to earlier version...

thanks Coreman, but I have never did any Lenovo update so far, my wireless driver is 11/02/05 ver. 9.0.1.21. May be opposite to you I should get new driver and try?, I can always rollback if it get worse.
Besides, I try to apply some logic (if you can do that with computers at all), same driver is used to connect to whatever wireless, why should it not work with one?.
