T-40 fan/over-heating problem

#1 Post by slee9421 » Fri Jun 08, 2007 4:18 pm

Hopefully someone can help me. I have a T40. Model # is 23732cu. It is out of warranty. The problem that I am having is the machine will boot and load windows. After a short period of time, the machine will shut down. I beleive it goes into the hibernation mode (power and battery indicator remain on). The thinkpad manual says if the machine over-heats, it will go into hibernation. I can manually shut it down and re-start. Same thing happens only sooner. I replaced the fan. It runs when the machine starts-up. I can also hear it running when the machine is on. It has allways been a good machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What fan do you have? Long or the short one?

I have the short one. I also used thermal grease when I replaced it.

Install Notebook Hardware Control (http://www.pbus-167.com/) or TP FanControl utility (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/)and monitor your CPU/GPU temperatures. See how the temperature rises after you boot the machine and report it here. Maybe we can help looking at the temperatures.

problem is, the machine won't stay on long enough to access and load the program. Is there some way to change a bios setting to prevent the auto-hibernation?

I don't think so.

Only suggestion I can think right now is to check how things are with a long fan, and be very careful to apply a really thin layer of thermal paste.

You need to take an unused credit card and spread the greese evenly. Detailed instructions can be found in Arctic website.

Was there a thermal pad on the fan when you replaced it? Did you replace the thermal pad or use a copper shim? If you did neither, the fan is not making contact with the CPU.

T4x does not use thermal pads on the CPU like the T60 GPU heatsink. I believe your problem might be related to some kind of spyware on Windows. If you for example run a Linux Live CD do you still get hibernation/reboots?

Old fan Fan did not have a thermal pad. New one did not either. I thought about spyware or a virus as well. Machine will do the same thing just entering the bios set-up. I have reset the bios to default. I would think that if windows has not booted, the spyware or virus would not load and be able to cause problems.
