Removing TVT Packet Filter Miniport

#1 Post by KWheelerAZ » Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:09 pm

Is it possible to remove the TVT Packet Filter Miniport I see listed in Device Manager? I have 23 copies listed (no joke) and they all have little yellow exclamation points on them. Is there some way to get rid of them? When I try a straight ahead un-install they always error out and say "... this device may be needed to start the system ..."

This is a T43p with WinXP Pro SP2 and 2GB of RAM.

TIA.

Try booting up in Windows SAFE MODE (press F8 at boot). Go to Device Manager, right click on each device with the yellow exclaimation mark and uninstall them. Let us know how it goes.

My guess is that this has something to do with either Rescue and Recovery, the Client Security Solution or related software, or Access Connections. All I can think of is: (1) go into Windows Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the problem software, or else (2) run a registry cleaner program, or (3) use System Restore to go back to a time when you did not have the problem, or (4) restore a backup.

Try to find out the device driver filename, search for that file on your hard drive, then right-click on it and check it's properties. You might find the software responsible for the driver. AFAIK, I do not have that driver on my system.

Got it! :D

IBM / Lenovo finally acknowledged the problem and posted a fix:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 66963.html

Excerpt from the last item on the page:

Symptom
The operating system crashes after VPN software is installed due to an incompatibility issue with the TVT Packet Filter.

Note: The TVT Packet Filter is designed to enable advanced administrative users to configure the ability to control network traffic on computers that have Rescue and Recovery installed. This filter is not necessary for standard installations.

Solution
If you encounter this issue, run the following commands from a command prompt:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\pfdinst\netsvcinst /remove /cid:"lgl_tvtpktfiltermp"
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\pfdinst\netsvcinst /remove /cid:"lgl_tvtpktfilter"

That's it! All fixed now. 8) Other interested users, take note.

^ Interesting. I have this issue (just one instance of the TVT Packet Filter Miniport) but there is no pfdinst directory.

Then I would say run a Search in Windows Explorer to find "netsvcinst". Perhaps it moved in newer versions of the Lenovo software.

My systems got corrupted and I have subsequently re-install Windows XP bypassing the unneeded Lenovo Rescue & Recovery software. I must say the system runs a LOT faster without it.

Good luck.

I ran a search and "netsvcinst" was not found anywhere on my boot drive. I guess Lenovo must have modified how the software deploys without fixing the bug and without updating their help item.

Well, all I can say is it make require backing up the data, erasing the drive and re-installing Windows XP without the offending Lenovo software.

That worked wonders for me. In the end all the little "quirks" I had before are all gone now. My ThinkPad is fast, reliable and stable once again.
