T41p seemingly random reboot issues...
I just got a second hand T41p and it seems to run fine until I get to the point of playing a game on it. then in about 2 minutes I get a distorted BSOD and a reboot. Is there anyway I can find out what the BSOD says? I'd like to find out what is going on with this machine. I have checked the event viewer and have found nothing that indicates a video card problem.
Any suggestions?

Right Click My Computer>Properties>Advanced. Under Startup and Recovery press "Settings" then uncheck "Automatically restart" under "System failure".
You will be able to read the BSOD next time.

Good piece of info to know, thanks.
I would guess that either you have the short fan or the GPU is not making proper contact with the HS.

Yep, there's the short and the long heatsink version. You have a Dedicated Graphic Chip, you need the long fan so that when the GPU is working full steam the heat will be transferred through a heatpipe out to the heatsink exhaust. I also had that problem with my new T42p, unfortunately I've a noisy T43p heatsink replacement which is known to be more noisy than T41p/T42p heatsinks. You should remove the keyboard and find out if you have the long fan or altenatively run TPFanControl and see if your GPU temp rises above the 90C when gaming

well I downloaded the HMM and got my phillips screwdriver dirty. Turns out that I apparently have a M10 version of the long HS and the lazy sod that installed it left the flippin plastic on it. I removed it and the existing ruined TIM and replaced it with Arctic Silver Ceramique, low and behold I can game for more than 2 minutes, I was up to an hour before I got bored
Life is good again
Thanks for the suggestions I thought the HS would have been properly installed but I guess if there is no gaming done on the system then you'd never know...

Glad you got it worked out. I have a spot for T41P (as evidenced by the machine in my sig) and I would hate to read about the death of one here.

All the T40p, T41p and T42p come from factory with the "flippin thing" installed from factory maybe it's for insulation but i am sure about that.the.vert wrote:Turns out that I apparently have a M10 version of the long HS and the lazy sod that installed it left the flippin plastic on it.

Good to know it was a simple fix to get you back up and running. It's also disturbing to know that the heatsink was not installed correctly at the factory.
