No Sound Device on T43

#1 Post by galactawitz » Tue Jun 12, 2007 10:12 am

The T43 I have suddenly lost it's sound last week. There is no device listed in the Sound section of the device manager, so it's like the computer is not even detecting that there is a sound card.

I've done a bunch of searches online and read through most of this forum trying to find out why this is. Here is a list of things I've tried (at least what I can think of):

1. Installing the intel chipset driver.

2. Checking if windows audio was enabled.

3. Updating from Windows Update

4. Making sure modem was enabled in bios

5. Running PC Doctor to try to detect soundmax.

6. Playing with connections inside the computer.

That is all I can think of at the moment, but I have spent hours on this and can't get it resolved. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Download, burn, and boot up a knoppix (linux) CD. If sound works you do not have a hardware problem.

Driver won't load

#4 Post by galactawitz » Tue Jun 12, 2007 3:11 pm

I've tried the driver, and when I try to install it at the end of the installation it says driver not found, asks me to restart and try again, which doesn't work.

I will try the linux disk and see what that does.

I tried the bootable knoppix cd and that didn't wouldn't play sound either.

Yes I used the instructions for the drivers, and was the same "no driver found"

Thanks for the ideas, does anyone have any others or is there some sort of hardware issue. It's pretty rare for soundcards just to go bad isn't it?

Would it be worth it to do a system restore and see if it is detected or do you think that would be a waste of time and there is a hardware issue?

System restore...not worth it. A BIOS reset might be worth it though.

Is the sound on board or is it seperate? Is it possible to replace the card because the laptop is out of warranty.

The sound chipset is built into the system board.

If all you want to do is listen to music or whatever, I use a set of Seinnheiser USB headhones that include their own sound card. It's an option for you. An added benefit is that they're great for gaming and Skype.
