Upgrade DVD on a T40

#1 Post by Myka » Tue Jun 12, 2007 12:16 pm

I'd like to upgrade the DVD-ROM / CD-RW drive on my T40 to a DVD +-RW / CD-RW drive. Which one can I put in there?

The spot for optical drives is called UltraBay Slim. Any UltraBay Slim drive should work.

- well, if you cannot (or if you just will not!) afford an internal DVD-burner in your ThinkPad, then you of course have the option of getting a much cheaper (and much more bulky!) external DVD-writer; they are available (as dual-layer burners) from approx. $ 60 and up see e.g. here or here.

For a genuine ThinkPad internal DVD-writer, perhaps check eBay or the forum.thinkpads "Marketplace", here --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=11

All information on what drives are compatible with which thinkpad, can be found on ThinkWiki.

Your T40 need Ultrabay Slim devices, those exist both genuine IBM as manufactured by others.

And if you do find a replacement, I am interested in your old one - I just need something cheap that I can use to install the system on a T40. :)

Has anyone seen this - NEC Slim 16X DVD Burner AD-5540A, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW, 4X DVD+/-R DL, 8X DVD-ROM. OEM ? They want $60 for it new at Ron's. Will it work in a T40?

No, the "NEC Slim 16X DVD Burner AD-5540A" you mention will not fit in any T4x... because it is too fat! Its height is 13 mm (or probably 12.5 mm or 12.7 mm, to be exact, this thickness being the standard for most laptops).

If you check this thread (post by smugiri on Nov. 17) you will see that the T4x's require a slimmer drive - only being 9.5 mm thick.

Sorry...

Search the T4x forum for "9 height dvd" (Search for all terms), and check out the few variants available.
