Reload XP on T42

Hi, I've reloaded XP from the hidden IBM partition numerous times before and had great success with a fresh install.

However, recently, when I did a reinstall of XP, my system hangs when doing updates. My T42 is about 2 1/2 years old now but I don't think that should be the problem.

What's the best procedure to follow when reinstalling - load XP, do the MS updates then the thinkpad updates?

I prefer to use Software Installer instead of Software Update and the latest time around, Software Installer did not pick up numerous updates from the support site.
