cracked XGA, sent SXGA+ from ebay seller

#1 Post by steve_zen » Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:46 am

hey everyone, I know this question's been answered a few times already, but I'm still doing some head scratching over here.

basically, I managed to crack my XGA screen on my t42 23734WU, ibm said sorry but it wouldn't be covered under warrenty and to consider changing it myself.
I headed over to ebay and won this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1

basically he states it's an XGA screen 1024x768
Part Number - 13N7045 - 11P8364
Alternative part numbers 92P6756 - 92P6759 - 92P6726
fits T40 T41 T42 T43 R50
the screen he actually sent was the 13N7045 which is in fact a SXGA+ screen with 1400x1050

http://www.screentekinc.com/search-lcd- ... =searchbox

so my local handy electrician fitted it for me and said it worked but text was all out of sorts and just looked plain wrong!
so I've been in touch with the ibm laptop part seller from ebay and he says he'll take the screen back and refund me.
from reading here this evening I gather if I get the correct video/LCD cable I can make my laptop run at this higher resolution, my grahpics card is a 7200 radeon.

so does anyone happen to know if my laptop will run at 1400x1050 with this screen and the appropriate LCD cable?

assuming it does work, can I switch back to 1024x768 for web surfing etc without everything going fuzzy?

many thanks in advance!

AFAIK, you just need another screen cable to get the higher-resolution screen working. Your graphics card will certainly be able to take the extra load. The erroneous display with fuzzy text is caused by the "old" XGA cable IMO.

I would not send the screen back for refund. You get significantly more screen "real estate" with the SXGA+ screen!

Reverting to XGA resolution is possible, but in most cases, the best results are attained when setting the resolution to maximum.

Good luck!

I have a friend who cracked his screen. He got a direct (proper part) replacement from eBay (checking to be sure NOT DOA), had it installed by a local service, and it was a complete non-issue. Just be sure to have the correct part. ... JDH

hey everyone!
thanks for such speedy responces to my query.
actually I have two thinkpads, one with the SXGA+ which I'm using now and the other with just plain old XGA.
I must say, even though SXGA+ has more screen space, better for games, programs etc etc. I really liked the XGA for just surfing and being able to read all the text without having to get within 10cm's of the screen for some reading material. this is especially true if reading for extended periods.
I've been trying to mess with font sizes and DPI settings, great for windows, not so good for IE6.
that's kinda why I was hoping an SXGA+ could be switched to 1024x768 without the blurriness thas' soo apparent when I try this on my SXGA+ laptop. anyway, I'll toy around with this SXGA+ machine and see if I can find some workable solution before sending back the screen.
oh also, I was wondering, does the SXGA+ screen make the laptop VISTA compatible? not that I'm gonna jump on that bandwagon just yet, but my reasoning was I could fit the SXGA+, extend the warrenty, then sell the laptop on ebay and buy another with regular XGA laptop which should be cheap as chips by now.
any thoughts?
many thanks everyone!

SXGA+ does nothing to make the machine more likely to run Vista. If you are sure the panel is good and cannot get a replacement, I would be glad to trade a working XGA screen assembly.

hehe, it's a tempting offer. alas, I'm in the UK and the ebay seller has offered to give me my money back.
basically the screen is a new SXGA+ and cost around 180 dollars.
I've seen used XGA panels on ebay that'd work fine going for around 40 bucks! of course since I woke up to this, everyone else has too and prices have doubled!
to my eyes, XGA is just much less of an eye squinting affair. so I'll be using one laptop for apps, games etc with SXGA+ resolution.
and I'll replace the XGA in my other laptop, assuming it's gonna look all blurred at 1024x768 with this SXGA+ panel.
pretty crazy I know, but I just gotta go with what works for me I guess.
thanks for the offer though!

Perhaps a SAD thing for you guys, but whatever you do SXGA+ screens won't work on Radeon 7500.

You will be constantly getting digital noise on the screen. external VGA will look perfectly fine though.

I'm mostly sure it is the video chip to blame because every time I tested it, it was sxga+ panel, sxga+ cabel and correct inverter.

Must upgrade motherboard first.

Since there is a reported instance on the boards of a UXGA LCD working on a Radeon 7500 equipped T4x, I'm not sure what to think. :?:

UXGA on Radeon 7500 -> NO
Tried two days ago, genuine, complete T42p assembly - it ddin't even power up. Blak screen, backlight was on, but screen was black.

SXGA+ on Radeon 7500 -> 50/50
Definitely DOESN'T work on older radeons. I think it only does in latest motherboard revisions, starting with T42.
Most of the time you get digital/fuzzy image.

SXGA+ seems to possible with 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 GPU/VRAM

#13 Post by Johan » Wed Oct 31, 2007 2:14 am

With respect to the possibility of using a 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 for SXGA+ it seems that IBM did indeed deliver at least three T42's in this configuration; see T42 14.1" SXGA+ 2373-KFU and T42 14.1" SXGA+ 2378-R5U and T42 14.1" SXGA+ 2379-R5U.

This is also confirmed if you see what:
zverg in this thread (on Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:04 am) wrote:I can confirm that SXGA+ with 7500 is possible.. when Solectron replaced my motherboard with the WRONG MODEL I had a 7500 for a few days before I demanded immediate on-site service to replace it with the correct Radeon 9600 board.. it still worked fine with my sxga+ screen.
I just had a quick look in the ltwbook, but I found no other 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 SXGA+ T42's than the three abovementioned.

Best regards,

Johan

Two forum members, namely clickpoint and doylnea, got their Radeon 7500 to drive UXGA panels. doylnea posted some pix here. Dimitri, did you use a UXGA cable and a UXGA inverter? Also, are you sure the UXGA panel was functional?

I've done two SXGA+ upgrades with ATI 7500 GPU, with no issues at all. I took the simple route and swapped out the entire assembly (cover, hinges, cables, etc.)

They've been fine for months now.
