Wireless upgrade on T40

#1 Post by Shenandoah » Wed Jun 13, 2007 11:51 am

All,

I've got a T40 with the Cisco 802.11b card and would like to upgrade it to one of the Atheros cards. I'm guessing I would remove the CISCO Systems software that is loaded on my T40 and then load the latest driver for the Atheros card?

Has anyone else done a similar upgrade? Do I need to do anything special to Access Connections or will it automatically identify the Atheros card? Thanks.

Eric

You might need to install Atheros driver/Access Connection and Thinkpad HotKey driver in certain order for Fn F5 to work. Search old threads for more information. I have done an intel -> atheros upgrade on my T42 without any issue.

I'm about to do the same upgrade when the part comes in. I'll keep an eye on this thread. If I do it before you do I will post my experiences. I'd appreciate you doing the same.

I once had a T40 with a Intel 2100b and replaced the Intel adapter with a Atheros a/b/g. I uninstalled the driver and all the software related to the Intel 2100b (proset/access connections), then i replaced the Intel adapter with the Atheros adapter and installed the driver for the Atheros before i reinstalled AC. I had to change all my profiles in AC because all the profiles was still referring to the old wlan adapter that didn't exist anymore. After doing this everything worked fine.
Now i got a T43p that came with a Intel 2200bg and did the same thing and got it replaced with a Atheros. Everything worked fine this time as well.
The reason why i did this is because the Intel adapters gave me nothing but problems with lot of disconnects. Both of the Atheros adapters worked great so i'm pretty sure i'll do the same with my next laptop if it's shipped with a Intel adapter.

Installed atheros a/b/g wireless card in my T40

All,

I purchased an Atheros a/b/g wireless card on ebay and installed it on my t40. Things went smoothly. I had a Cisco 802.11b card originally. Here's what I did:

1) Replaced the Cisco Aeronet card with the Atheros card

2) Turned the machine on and Uninstalled the CISCO Aeronet software under Add/Remove programs

3) Plugged in a network cable to retreive the latest driver for the Atheros card from IBM.

4) Installed the driver

5) Removed the CISCO wireless card profile from Access Connections

6) Added a profile for the Atheros card under Access Connections

After that, everything worked fine!

Can you provide a link to the latest driver?
