If the IBM screen doesn't show, probably motherboard... it's possible for it to be the ram or wireless though.

If the IBM screen does show then it's probably the HD.

Try the 'PC-Doctor for Windows' tests when it's up (should already be there under Start --> Programs).

Or download the 'PC-Doctor for DOS' bootable version (search for 1ety44ww at Lenovo ThinkPad support) and burn the iso image to a CD.

FYI, I've had similar issues on T40, T41 & R50's. When they do boot, they'll test out fine. You just can't ever shut them off or they may never boot again.

Motherboard needs repair or replacement.

I have recently experienced this with my T40P, when it doesn't boot, the system gives out 1 long beep, 3 (or 6?) beeps and 1 long beep, fortunately, i got a warranty extension and brought this to the service center, they diagnosed it as the security chip being corrupted, i don't know how this would have happened, maybe a firmware upgrade to the SC and BIOS?

Anyway, they just replaced the whole board and the default wifi card, i'll be bringing it back cause im having issues with the bluetooth card, also, might ask them to replace the LCD as it seems to backlight bleeding in some areas of the LCD..
