T40 battery Not charging

I have a T40 (about 5 years old) and although the power meter recognizes the battery and says how much charge is left, it won't charge it.

I've tried three different batteries with no success, so it's got to be the thinkpad.

It started a couple of months ago with an existing battery for no apparent reason (not one of the new ones)

I'm running XP...

Any help appreciated.

do you have the ability to try the same thing with ther original factory preload..?
so as to seperate hardware from software..?

try to check+clean battery pin on the thinkpad,
maybe it's dirty
