Fan problem after installing wireless card

#1 Post by IYS » Fri Jun 15, 2007 8:08 am

My T42 that I bought a few months ago didn’t have an internal wireless card so I just recently purchased one off eBay. It’s a Atheros 5213A card (not original IBM). When I installed the card I got the 1802 Error. I used this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20365 to remove the Error. I did not get the 01C9 error however I went ahead and patched it for that as well (would that matter?).

Anyway the problem I’m having is after installing the wireless card, the fan of the laptop seems to be always on until it gets to around 30-33° Celsius (which it hardly gets to). Before installing the internal wireless card the fan usually turned on at 41+ degrees Celsius (now around 33-34). Also it seems like it’s getting hotter faster than before. The T42 has always been set to the slowest speed as I don’t need much CPU power.

Anyone know what the problem could be? :?

well definitely the wireless card. Those things do generate a good amount of heat you know? They suck power which inturn generate heat so surely they'll heat up faster. I don't know exactly why the fan runs differently, the startup temps should be the same unless there's something in the BIOS that controlls it differently based on how many devices are plugged in.

I think the fan is triggered by things other than the cpu. Atheros cards generate alot of heat when turned on, with me it says MiniPCI:45c when it's on and 40c when the card is off... and thus the fan runs more often when I have the wireless on.
