Upgrading my memory -noobie-

#1 Post by Palermo » Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:22 pm

Hello everyone!,

I recently got my t43 from ebay and I have decided to upgrade my ram to 2g. The problem is, i'm not sure where the second slot is located :(. I know one is below the device. Plus, will upgrading my memory void my warranty? I know noob question

Lastly, what is the first upgrade you guys did to your thinkpads and why?

Wonderful site!

Thanks!

memory is always the first upgrade :)

Anyways, the other slot is under the palm rest (touchpad area) you have to remove the keyboard and all that to get it but it's fairly easy. If you are whimpish just grab the Hardware Maintainance Manual which shows you step by step of how to take it apart.

And yeah, memory is a user replaceable part so it wont void your warranty. The HMM shows you how to do it so they wouldn't create one if it would voice your warranty :)

Oh and yeah, welcome to the TP world, i love this place too...

On my T43's the other memory slot is under the keyboard. No problem though there are only 3 or 4 screws to remove. Good idea like someone said to check the HMM if you are not familiar.

Memory is a fast and easy upgrade. Next, besides CPU, there really is no other upgrade other than your hard drive. Go for the biggest and fastest you can. A fairly simple upgrade using any of several available hard disk clone software. My preference right now is Acronis True Image.

There are quite a number of movies on IBM's site - here: Hardware removal and installation movies, showing e.g. how to upgrade memory on a T43... see for yourself --> Memory installation movie for optional memory on the bottom of the system - T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p.

Well, just yet another fantastic function in the ThinkPad universe! :-)

The movies were great and it would have been better if they had a video on how to remove the keyboard. Do you guys know where i can find information about dismantling my t43 to access the second slot?

Thanks!

and if the HMM is too much for ya, here's a movie:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50227

that's how to remove the keyboard.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-51447

then there is where the DIMM is and how to remove it.

One question concerning the RAM upgrading :)

I've found two models which i guess (:?:) should work well in my T43:

1GB SO-DIMM DDR2 533MHz 200pin A-DATA (PC 4200)
1GB SO-DIMM DDR2 667MHz 200pin A-DATA (PC 5400)

Do both of these memories work in a T43? Is there any performance/speed difference between these two memories?
(the price difference is about $0.5 so doesn't matter)

Thanks in advance ;)

There will be no difference.

Usually the most recent memory is the least expensive. I recommend a name brand. I find Samsung in many new thinkPads that I see.
