Quick question about AC Adapter warranty

#1 Post by Vasant56 » Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:36 pm

My AC Adapter failed last week due to a power surge or something during a storm, as I was getting up to move for the summer in a few days (storm couldn't have waited 3 days..), I decided to hold off using the laptop until after I moved. The thing is it's now somewhere in one of my boxes, which I Plan on unpacking over the next few weeks. My question is: Is my AC Adapter covered under warranty, and do I need to return the broken one? I'd rather start using my laptop now than wait or have to start unpacking like crazy to look for it.

Best Regards

The AC adapter should be covered by the same warranty of your Thinkpad. You can always call IBM Service to see what they can do for you. If you can not get one replaced, you may be able to get one from the marketplace forum here, or Newegg has a AC adapter in the open box section for around $45.00. It is always good to have a spare adapter in any case...

Call for replacement. They do want the old one back. Within 30 days. That should give you time to unpack meanwhile once the
replacement arrives you should be ThinkPading away..... The replacement will arrive quickly. For me where I am located they arrive the next day. I think they send them overnight so where ever you are located they should arrive the next day.

Brad,

Is this a new policy from Lenovo? Last time I chhecked, AC adapters were considered "scrap" and did not have to be returned.

Lenovo now sends out a return label with all replacement parts regardless of whether they want the part back or not.

Chris,

I have not replaced a A/C adapter under warranty for quite some time. The last time I did I sent the old one back. Their policy definitely could have changed.

In any case the adapter has failed and if you let them know you can probably have another by tomorrow. You would have plenty of time to find the old broken one or if you don't have to return the old one save the time looking for it.

I believe that some of their return policies have changed. They no longer want keyboards of wrist rests back when you ask for replacements. This was different last year when then wanted everything back.

Sometimes they include a return label but they really don't want/expect an item back. When this happens you can just call in to confirm it either way.

I was sent a screw set that had a return label - they said they would note the service order and that I should just throw away the label.

Hey guys, IBM is sending me a new AC Adapter, but the problem is they said they want the old one back in 5 days, and I can't seem to find it anywhere! What do I do if I can't find it? Has anyone dealt with this situation (will they let me hold onto it, or will I have to return or pay for it). IBM is a little expensive and I'd rather just buy it from the marketplace than through them if I can.

Anyways please let me know my options, but hopefully it just turns up.

Thanks

5 days is not what I have ever heard from them. I would call and ask to speak to someone else.

Look for your old one and if you can't find it then you can go to eBay and find another. I wouldn't worry about the 5 days. Don't take my word for it though. Call them now and ask again. 5 days is unreasonable.

Yeah it really is. I just don't want to risk not getting the adapter at this point (if I end up finding it tomorrow). Will they let me return the new one once I get it if I can't find my original? How strict are they on returning broken things, can I just hold on to the new one? I dont want to lose my warranty

If they require that you return the old part, what they will do is if the part is not returned they will send you a bill for the cost of the new part. 5 days is much too short, but normally, it is not that bad to put the old part into the new package and send it off via DHL, you can even call in for pickup. But I guess in your case you are moving, it may take some time to find it. Best thing to do is to call back and explain your situation to see if maybe a month is reasonable. I'm sure this can be worked out.

Hi Guys,
So here's an update:

]
I got the adapter today, all that was included was a slip that said "EXPENSE PARTS REQUISITION", and in big red letters "WRITE OFF ALL PARTS USED"), and at the top had IBM's address in the FROM, and my address in the TO, behind it was a carbon copy of the form that said in big red letters at the bottom: "NEW PARTS RETURN"...

Where is the stuff to send back the adapter? Do they still require me to send it back?

Also.. they only sent the part that has the adapter, the actual plug isn't included (meaning I'll need to find my adapter to use that attachment before I can use my laptop.. unless I can find it elsewhere).

Any suggestions?
