T42 harddrive 80gb capacity question

#1 Post by Stevesoura » Wed Jun 20, 2007 6:42 pm

Hi, Im trying to figure out why my hard drive capacity is only 73.38 out of a 80 hdd. Im not sure if the 6gb are the hidden partition. How can I tell? I looked under computer management>disk management and only see local disk drive, no other partitions. About three days ago, I used Arconis to ghost my original 40gb to my new 80gb. I dont remember the 40gb having any hidden partitions. So what do you guys thinks.

It has to do with the way hard drive manufacturers calculate drive capacity. Computers use binary (base 2), hard drive manufacturers use decimal. One k is actually 1024 decimal for a computer.
See the linked white paper for a detailed explanation.

yes that plus the hidden partition. The hidden partition is 6GB as you said so add that to the space you have now and you'll end up with the full capacity of about 78GB (refer to HarryCs post as to why 78GB instead of 80GB)

Why windows doesn't see it is because the BIOS is the one hiding it. There's settings in the BIOS that can allow the OS to see it and remove it and all that but if that's hidden/secure then the OS wont see the extra space. It's the IBM Pre-Desktop area.
