LCD Display got fuzzy even at boot after win driver removal?

#1 Post by philns » Mon Jul 02, 2007 3:24 am

Hi

I was reinstalling IBM T40 ati radeon mobility 9500 drivers. Since the installer said to remove previous drivers, I probably made the mistake of selecting:
desktop->Properties->Settings->Advanced->Adapter->Properties->Driver->Uninstall (advanced)

The message was something like: remove of ati radeon mobility 9500 from hardware configuration. :shock:

I then rebooted immediately after, and then display just showed all random dots all around even at BIOS boot stage. Not a single word readable. After the boot to windows XP (or BIOS error page ?) , the display shows just vertical random lines, and all I can see is the shadow of a mouse pointer moving with the mouse, but no other intelligible information on screen.

:(

Did I really spoiled the card via Windows software ? Any way to recover ?

Connecting a VGA external monitor shows the same.

Thanks for any hints you might have. :idea:

Phil

Try booting into safe mode and installing the driver there. If your XP 'system restore' is turned on, you could also fall back to a known good configuration from the same safe mode screen. This second option may in fact be the better solution in your case. In the future deinstall the ATI driver from control panel, add/remove programs.

mmm, unfortunately I think the problem might be in the hardware, since I removed the disk from its slot, (so no OS and no drivers available), and the LCD is full of random dots anyway instead of the BIOS messages. Display is fuzzy and unreadable since time 0 after boot.

What stuns me is that it might got broken exactly at drivers removal.

Any other possibility ?

Thanks
Phil

I get a similar problem on a T41. Sometimes the display just degrades over the time the laptop is running, but sometimes it is completely unreadable. The last time was after running Microsoft Update.

My usual way of dealing with this is to disconnect from the mains and remove the battery and leave for 20 minutes. Don't know why it works, but it does for me.
