T43 - Power On Wireless Radio

#1 Post by Parisk » Mon Jul 02, 2007 6:26 am

The T43 connects to my wireless network, through an existing profile (I have been using for a year or so), without any problems. However, all of a sudden,....

I click on ThinkAdvantage Access Connections, trying to see available wans, and it tells me that the Wireless Radio is Off, so I can't see any wans. I turn it on (From the ThinkAdvantage Access Connections, from the Keyboard, from the Control Panel,...) , but nothing happens, it still show is off.

So, I can connect through the existing profile, but not to any new wans, e.g., when I travel, since I can't see them.
:(
Any ideas?

Did you upgrade any drivers on your computer, upgrade AC or anything else that could be the reason why it stopped working? What kind of wlan card do you have.....let me guess Intel?

I had the same problem with my T42 recently. IBM/Lenova phone support talked me through uninstalling drivers and then letting the TP search for new hardware. This put me back in business. Sorry I don't remember the step-by-step procedure.

The weird thing is that I did not upgrade any drivers, or other software (that I know of).

I don't mind uninstalling and re-installing drivers (if I have to), but I don't want to lose risking connectivity altogether, as I am on the road.

I thought of uninstalling the Intell(R) Pro wireless adapter from Control Panel/System and then reboot and let XP try to install it and find a default driver for it, but I don't know that it wouldn't just end up with the same "bad?" drivers, and cycling thought those installs/uninstalls, can get quite a time waster, so I don't want to try it until I can get a better idea of what the problem is.

Oh, how do I long for those good old DOS days ;-)

I just noticed something else, that may be pertinent.

The MAC address in the ThinkVantage Access connections dialog and the one in Control Panel, System, Hardardware, Device Manager, NetWork Adapters, Advanced tabs are *NOT* the same !!!

Is there anything I can try to fix this? It's getting worse. Now, I keep losing my wifi connection every 5-10 minutes, and I have to repair the connection.

Is there a way to remove/re-install all drivers and ThinkVantage Access Connections?

Open up Access Connections, go to Configure -> Global Settings and make sure "Enable automatic wireless LAN radio control" is unchecked.

Thanks, Laz. I did that. Then, while being connected and on-line, I opened Access Connections, View Status. Wireless showed "Off", though even though I was on-line !! I clicked "Power On Wireless Radio", and the Operating State still showed "Radio Off".

So the problem is that unless I connect with the two profils that I have saved, i.e., when I travel, I cannot find WLANs to connect to, since the Wireless Cinnections Status dialog shows the radio off, no matter what.
