New 1Gb stick. What should i do before install after install
Just got a new 1.GB to add to my 512mb that came with my T43 2668.
I have heard I can now turn the page file off now. Is there anything I else I could/should do before or after installation?

I agree. But it's okay to reduce it a little bit, say to 512MB.richk wrote:I would not turn the page file off.

It requires the exact same amount of HDD space as the total RAM capacity. After this upgrade of yours, it now uses 1.5GB HDD space.wantathinkpad wrote:Yeah also please tell me the truth about hibernation.

Re: New 1Gb stick. What should i do before install after ins
I would suggest to change the paging file to the default/recommended values for 1.5gb ram after you installed the new ram. I have seen a lot of discussions about the recommended paging file size, but never seen any good explanation why not use the recommended values (unless you don't have the available harddisk space). There are reasons why the recommened values is pretty high, but i guess others can explain this better then me since i never really cared to study the size of the paging file. There are also documents available from Microsoft that explain how to monitor your system to find the optimal paging file size if you want to spend time finding out or you could just use the recommended values which is most likely fine.wantathinkpad wrote:Just got a new 1.GB to add to my 512mb that came with my T43 2668.

Here is what I know about the page file. The answer is a definate "it depends". It really depends on what you are running. If you do serious photo editing, the default size is marginal and you probably need to max-out your real RAM. If you do web browsing and office applications, you can get by with no page file. (Unless you work on very large files)

I decide not to touch the pagefile and just install the ram tonight... I haven't noticed too much of a difference in things in a good way. But it is working certain programs like my virus scan is already loaded by the time I can see my desktop. I am a multitasker, ( at least 15 firefox windows open, media player, AIM, and something else.) But I haven't done that as yet. However, what I did do was re-install updates that had been slowing my computer down such as the power manager, rescue and recovery (from 2005). Unfortunately I think I also installed that Microsoft Genuine advantage tool through automatic updates (although I did uncheck it). But that and 34 other updates went through and my computer is working smoothly. So while nothing seems to have sped up too much, nothing seems to slow down and that is perfectly fine with me.
