T40 fuzzy/garbled screen with certain

#1 Post by jargoone » Tue Jul 03, 2007 8:51 am

My SXGA+ T40 has a weird issue with video. When I perform certain operations, like dragging windows, or especially playing DVDs, the screen gets sort of garbled or distorted. It's hard to describe. I'd shoot a quick movie, but I don't have it right now.

This happens in both Windows and Linux, so I'm pretty sure it's not the driver.

It's under warranty, and I want it fixed. Anyone know what it could be?

Sounds like a problem with the graphics accelerator to me. In Windows, you can go to Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot, and turn acceleration down or off. Give that a try.

You also might have a problem with the solder joints on the graphics chip (a ball grid array chip).
See following thread for more on that. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=33952

Yeah, certainly sounds like a hardware problem to me. Support ticket is open, we'll see what happens...
