T41p or T42p
T41p or T42p
I´ve got some tempting offers on different refurbed (1 yr warranty) T-models:
T41p Pentium M 1.7Ghz,1Gb,60gb,14" 780$
T42p Pentium M 1.8Ghz,1Gb,60gb, 14" 880$
and
T42p 2,1 ghz, 60gb hdd, 15" uxga fv, 1000$ (not refurbed, 4 months warranty left).
I already have some parts/upgrades pulled out from previuos laptop:
a 2 ghz P M 755 SL7EM and a hitachi 7K100 100 GB.
I know the 15" model might be on the heavy side, althou I would enjoy the screen for the CS suite work I do. Another decision to make is between the T41p and T42p - considering all things equal (cpu, hdd, gpu, ram) is it only the fingerprint reader that sets them apart?
Thankful for any insights!
Cheers //M

Realistically the difference between the T41p & the T42p is zero. T42p uses Dothan processors. I do not use fingerprint reader, so I wouldn't care which one I go for, but the 100USD difference in the T41p vs T42p is decisive: go for the T41p, unless you like the 15" screen. IMO the 14.1" form factor is very nice.

For all practical purposes the machines are identical. Plus you already have upgrade parts. I would buy the cheapest of the lot, and install the parts you have to make the best you can.
I agree on the screen size, 15" is just to bulky for me. I have a laptop to use on the road. 14.1" is as large as I am willing to go, and for my daily uses I prefer the X series as I carry a laptop everyday, and travel around the city by train.

Re: T41p or T42p
Having gone from a 14.1" T40 to a 15" T42, I'm surprised at how little difference I feel in the weight of it in my laptop backpack with whatever else I have in there. However with the options you have in front of you, the T41p seems a clear winner.marvel wrote: I know the 15" model might be on the heavy side, althou I would enjoy the screen for the CS suite work I do.

You can't feel the weight difference between a 14" and a 15" in a bag (yeah, some people are bound to come here now telling me that they can, but whatever).
But you do feel the difference, if you use your laptop on your lap. 15" is noticeably bulkier.
Between the 14" T41p and T42p, I'd go for the T41p. If you prefer a nicer screen at the expense of weight and more $$$, get the T42p.

marvel, these are all fairly good deals by European standards. The weight difference between the 14.1" and 15.0" models is about 0.8 lbs. How often will you need to carry the laptop? If you'll use it mainly on a desk, I would get the 15.0" T42p because the higher resolution is really nice and you'll probably also like the Flexview much better than the 14.1" models' displays. When you need to carry it, you can reduce its weight by replacing the 9-cell battery with a 6-cell, and the optical drive with a travel bezel.
