T40p rebuilt from WinXP CD - wireless problem + questions

#1 Post by nickdutton » Wed Jul 04, 2007 5:25 am

Hello

I've just recovered my trusty T40p from an XP CD as I was away from my set of recovery disks.

I downloaded the drivers and tools from the website and all seems to be working well, but I am left with a few questions:

1. Wireless works through Windows, but I can't get the TP tools to power wifi on/off. I've tried reinstalling AC and drivers (atheros) in varous oders. I've looked here for help, but I wonder if there's something subtle that I missed?

2. I'm sure that I've seen a way to change my XP registration to my legit OEM one, but can't seem to find it again. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

3. Other apps. Not using the recovery CD means that I don't have DVD or CD burning. That's not a problem, I've got another DVD codec and a better (I think) CD-R solution (ImgBurn) , but *is* there a way to extract these apps from the install CDs?

Many thanks,

Nick

You need the Hotkey Features driver. I would recommend uninstalling Access Connections, reboot, install the Hotkey Features driver, reboot, then reinstall Access Connections. Additionally, if you downloaded your wireless driver from a site other than Lenovo's, that could prevent your wireless driver from being controlled by Fn + F5.

Thanks for the speedy response.

I've just spent my lunchtime uninstalling/installing various bits and pieces.

It seems that I was missing the TPPM driver, so now I can turn wifi on/off if I chose to let XP do the rest.

However, installing AC reverts to the old problem, i.e. the wireless card defaults to on, Fn+F5 shows it as off and can't change the state.

Incidentally, I can't disable the wireless adapter from the Windows device list as it tells me it "might be a boot device" - sigh.

Anyway I guess I can live with this, although AC is a neat utility...

...unless this makes any more sense to someone?

Thanks again,

N.

With Access Connections uninstalled, you can try to fix your wireless driver problems. Uninstall your Wireless driver software with Software Installer or from Windows Add or Remove Programs. Reboot, then reinstall the Atheros driver software downloaded from Lenovo. This should be filename 77wc39ww.exe. After this is installed, reboot, then install Access Connections 4.41 (any version from 4.11 on up should work).

I am not so familiar with the Atheros cards, but looking though some of the threads, I see where one user with the Atheros card fixed his problem with Fn + F5 by uninstalling the existing Access Connections and the Atheros driver software, rebooting, then installing the IBM Access Connections (Back level version) + wireless LAN driver pack from the following page. If you want to upgrade after that, uninstall Access Connections, reboot, uninstall your wireless driver software, install the newer wireless driver software, reboot, install the newer Access Connections software.

Thanks for the continued support.

I'll make a note of this and give it a go next time I've got some time.
