T43 Won't Power Up

#1 Post by Bth » Wed Jul 04, 2007 12:22 pm

I replaced the LCD screen. After doing so (very carefully), the unit powers up for a couple seconds then immediately shuts down. Must take the battery out and reseat it to attempt again, but does the same thing. I put the old screen back in, and it does it again. Was working fine before but the screen had damage.

Very similar behavior to this post:

Not sure what to do. Ideas?

Check the LCD cover switch. It is very easy to not get it aligned right when reinstalling the keyboard bezel.

Thanks. I have checked that carefully. I have a feeling like its something simple like that, but haven't figured it out yet.

Just a dumb suggest: Remove the AC cord, disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable that goes to the motherboard. Reconnect it. Power the laptop.

Sometimes when you insert the keyboard cable while AC current is present, the laptop would turn on but then shutdown after a few secs.

Thanks for the idea. I've tried the battery/ac-power disconnect/reconnect many times. It still just comes on for a few seconds, then turns off. I have to take the battery out and ac power cord out in order for it to even try again. Without doing that absolutely nothing happens when the power is pressed.

Are you still having this problem? I have a X41 that is doing the same thing. The LCD went out, so I swapped a new one in, and the machine wouldn't power up. I've tried booting it without the screen attached, and replaced the system board, and neither fixed it. I'm going to go through the machine again and make sure there's not a short.

There must be a short somewhere that is causing the system to shutdown. Are you able to see the IBM Splash/POST screen? If not, check to make sure every connection is properly seated on the motherboard and every screw is where it should go. A short somewhere is the only explanation I have for this problem.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I went back through my machine and started removing stuff and adding it back until the laptop wouldn't power back on. I tracked it down to the connection for the screen, so I looked at the cable and everything looked fine. I looked at the connection for the screen, and there was a bent pin. I removed the screws holding the circuit board down, and was able to use a small screw driver and straighten it back, and it works perfectly now. :)
