T43 w/ Matshita UJ-822S not reading DVDs

#1 Post by jesshorn143 » Wed Jul 11, 2007 8:55 am

Hi. I have had my T43 for just over a year and within the past 6-8 months or so, my multireader (Matshita UJ-822S) has stopped reading DVDs. (I have Windows XP and was thinking maybe it was a SP2 issue???) I have halfheartedly been trying to solve the problem for a while but am really frustrated with it now and want the issue resolved. I have tried DVD movies, burned DVD movies and data DVDs and it won't read any of them. When I open a movie player and try to access the drive, I get the message "D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.". There are no driver updates for this drive that I could find and I've tried removing and reinstalling the drive. Nothing has worked. It reads all CDs just fine. Anyone have any tips/advice/had this happen to them?? HELP!!

Thanks!

I just scanned some of the previous threads with a similar issue, and none of them came to a resolution.

Depending on how bad you want to try and get that drive to work, you can try the following.

1. Buy a CD/DVD drive cleaner disk and run it several times.
2. Try your drive in a different ThinkPad.
3. Reinstall Windows.
4. Buy a new DVD drive.

Hopefully someone else has better advice to get you going.

Are you running some sort of recording software? (Nero, EZCD creator, etc) sometimes, those can cause problems.

i have Sonic RecordNow (that came with the computer). I also have Intervideo WinDVD Creator but I'm pretty sure I got that after I started having problems. I downloaded Intervideo WinDVD because someone told me I need to have DVD decoder software (I had always just used windows media player before that).

ETA: I am also not able to burn DVDs (again, no prob with CDs)

It might be hardware, but my guess is that the burning software screwed things up. I don't know why CD/DVD burning has to be so hard.

I have had exactly the same drive and software on my T43 since August 2005 (2687-D3U).

Have you tried the "DVD Troubleshooter" found in Windows XP's Help and Support Center?

i have tried the dvd troubleshooter. but nothing has worked.

if it is a software issue, should I just uninstall recordnow and windvd creator? will there be a way to get recordnow back if i do that?

I don't think i know anyone with a thinkpad so I'm not sure I can try swapping drives.

As far as replacing the drive, my T43 is still under warranty. is it worth trying to get them to replace the drive?

ok, well, thanks for all the advice...i guess i'll just keep trying!! [/quote]

COMBO-drives problems

#8 Post by schmaud » Thu Jul 12, 2007 12:03 pm

Hi,

I have the third Combo-drive in my t42 in 2.5 years. Both exchanged on waranty. And I almost never use the drive. Lasttime I only noticed when I wanted to do a CD-restore on a new drive with the recovery CDs.

It ussually starts with problems with DVDs, continues with occational writing problems and then only a few CDs are recognized.

I am sure it is not a software problem, since the recovery CDs are not recognized ( I can read them on other computers).

Iam also guess that this is a common problem, since they had lots of them in stock ( > 400 for a small country like switzerland).

call IBm and have it replaced if still under waranty. Otherwise buy a drive with similar thickness. It shiuld be easy to swap the parts for fitting in the system. It will just be less pretty cosmetically.

cheers
