as long as i have it apart...

#1 Post by ccotenj » Thu Jul 12, 2007 1:54 pm

t40...

since at upgrade time it's gotta come apart to put the 2nd stick of memory in and to replace the hard drive, is it worth putting in a long fan?

anything else to look around for in there?

thanks in advance.

If you are looking for a long HSF, let me know, I have one!

The second stick of memory is installed thru a cover on the back. Neither piece requires you to open the machine or take anything apart. If you are not overheating, I would leave the fan alone.

I suppose, as always, it depends on what you do. I have a T41 that I have opened up to replace the CPU and I know I have the short fan. I used generic thermal compound, but cleaned and applied most carefully. I did all that some years ago now. My T41 runs daily, works daily, and is happy running multiple complete computers simultaneously. It runs as cool as a cucumber.

Easy to say when you're in Canada :) . gator, on the other hand, probably needed as much cooling as he could get. I've recently received several T41s and they all appear to have the short fan (2374-327 and -SU9) with the ATI Radeon 7500. Would/could the system run cooler with the long HSF? Any potential problems with the swap? Sorry for the noob questions, but the T4x is new territory for me.

If the long fan were needed in a T41 with a Radeon 7500 it would have been designed with one. I have a T41 with a Radeon 9000, and that is designed to use a long fan. I don't think you'd see much difference in overall system temp by using a long fan on a T41 w/ a 7500.

sorry, i guess i wasn't clear... i was considering the one through the cover on the back as the "first stick" upgrade... according to the hmm i have to take the keyboard off to get to the other one? or am i really missing something here?

The first stick is underneath the Palm Rest. What RAM are you upgrading from / to? How many sticks do you currently have and where are they plugged in?

1 512, and since it's not underneath the external cover, i'm gonna hazard a guess that it's on the inside... :) i recently bought this used, and have finally gotten some time to play around with it... i have 2 1gig sticks lying around doing nothing, so i didn't think it could hurt to stick them in when i've got some time on my hands...

all due respect, but i've been working with electronics (and computers) for over 25 years, and just because something wasn't "designed" with a certain part doesn't mean it wouldn't be better off with it, which is why i originally asked the question about the fan... i hope that doesn't come across the wrong way, because it's not meant to... it's just that i've come across many examples of electronics that like pieces from subsequent generations more than the pieces they came with...

To go from 512MB to 2GB, you'll have to remove the palm rest, remove the 512MB stick, and install 1GB stick. Then install the other 1GB stick underneath the rear cover. Before you comment on the effect of adding a long fan try it. Post your results and we'll all learn from it. I have tried it and have stated my findings.

Absolutely!

The long fan is very attractive because it solves the pulsing fan problem in the T41 and T42s that sometimes happen with the 9000 card. Orinigally the long HSF was used with the T4xp models, which had the 128 MB GPUs ... but I have seen that if you use the long HSF unit, it brings the temps down by 3-4 C atleast. Though it was not made for the non-p T4x models, having it is a must IMHO.

I would also have to say that just because it wasn't originally designed in, that adding a newer component/feature can be beneficial in some cases. If it can be documented, a couple of extra degrees of cooling from the long HSF would be worth it if it doesn't:

- introduce a new point of failure
- add an aesthetically unpleasing behaviour (sp. for our international friends :) ), such as more noise
- cost too much

That last point will be different for everyone. To me, a $10-$20 cost for a long fan and some time spent taking the system apart, would be worth a drop in system temperature of 3-4c. Over the remaining lifespan of the system, this can only help and not hurt it.
