It should boot but will not be running at 1.7Ghz since the processor that you are looking at is a 553Mhz bus and not a 400Mhz.

you can get the 400Mhz bus versions of the Dothans. Those will work but you can't use the 533mhz ones, or well you can but you wont get the speeds so just stick to anything without the .3 at the end :) 1.8Ghz is pretty cheap now and 2.0 is up there but make sure you get the long fan too (gator has one apparently) to keep it nice and cool.

My Dothan upgrade in my T41 runs at full speed. I don't have my TP on right now, but I am fairly sure it is a 400Mhz bus.

He's correct because the OP was talking about the 1.73Ghz version which is a 533Mhz bus. The multiplier would be 17 x 100 but since that chip would be a 13X multiplier it would only run at 1.3Ghz (13 x 100)

I'll have to look when I get a chance. My Dothan is 1.8Ghz, and it certainly runs at 1.8Ghz. So maybe it is a different Dothan.

stay away from those A versions... I think the one you need is the 479 Pin version not the 478.

(or maybe i got it backwards)

Doublecheck tho ....

As for that, you don't have the 1.86Ghz version which would be the 533Mhz bus. You have the 400mhz bus version which will run (at the right speed) in the T40 - 42s.

Take a look at the following link. Anything in the Dothan list will work, and long as it has an sSpec Number and is listed as having a front side bus of 400 MT/s. As mentioned, stay away from the 'A' 's. (.e.g. 725A, 735A, 745A)

In addition to staying away from the 7**As. You also need to ensure you get a B stepping chip. The C stepping chips do not work at full speed.

I upgraded my TP, and it was the stepping that bit me.

I have my ThinkPad running again. It is a 1.80Ghz Dothan. It runs at 1.8Ghz. It is a Pentium M 745 (different from a 740) and the Front Side Bus is 400Mhz. It is 479 pins. The machine is a 2373.

That's way overpriced. Here's is a 1.8 Dothan for less $$ -

If your set on a 1.7, here's one for $40.

yeah it would but i don't know about that price. Is it me or should that be a lot cheaper such as:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Pentium-M-735 ... dZViewItem

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/3616-Intel-Pentium- ... dZViewItem

Normally you can get a 1.8Ghz for like $50 - check the marketplace on this forum to see if anyone has any.
