Booq powersleeve 14" + Radtech ScreenSaverz

#1 Post by hiengu » Tue Oct 19, 2004 3:17 pm

This forum was really helpful in me deciding on accessories.

I ordered these two items on Sunday and I'll post a review once I get them. So far, I'd say Radtech service was very good on communication in that at least they sent me an order confirmation via email. Booq has not yet.

Did you get the 14 inch ScreenSaverz? I have a T42 14 inch, and would be curious to know which one fits, or if they are cuttable, if they don't fit perfectly.

Thanks.

I have the 14" screensaverz. It fits fine... no need to modify it.

Yes, the 14" one for the PC (no logo). I figure I better get all this stuff before shoving it into my backpack.

One other question, that I think is pretty stupid, but I just want to make sure not to make a mistake.

It's the 14-17 inch screen standard (4:3) Right? For the PC.

I love the look of the RadTech Powersleevz for Macintosh laptops. Does anyone make a similar product for Thinkpads?

There is this place: http://foofbag.com/

They only mention sizes for iBooks and such, but they are completely handmade, so they might be able to make you whatever you want, if you tell them dimensions. The fabric designs are a little loud on that page, but if click here:

http://foofpod.com/

You can see that the same company offers many more designs for little iPod bags. They may be able to use those designs for a sleeve that will fit your TP. I guess it's worth a shot. They look like great quality.

I just got back from OOPSLA this morning. It's funny that everyone I saw in my class had a thinkpad, lol. I couldn't help but notice one guy had a really nice black knapsack ... I looked at mine but now think mine looks awkwardly big ... more for a hike.

Plinkerton, yes i got the 14 to 17 screensaverz one for PC. I guess the PC one has no logo. None of the stuff I ordered has arrived yet though.

Thanks for that interesting link on foofbag, did you get one?

No, I don't want a foofbag thing. i already have a Booq, which i like. I was just giving that link for Mortalbard who asked if someone made RadTech like Powersleevz for something other than Macs. It seems that maybe because the Foofs are custom made, maybe they can do it.

I like the idea of a sleeve, but I want more padding and thicker protection for my TP. The ScreenSaverz look cool though, and I'll definitely be ordering one of those. Keep us updated on the fit and how you like it and everything.

Thats cool that everyone at OOPSLA (what is that?) Had a thinkpad.

OOPSLA - http://www.oopsla.org

I call it a geek fest (pretty neat to see what others are up to), but it stands for: "Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages, and Applications" ... it's the 19th Annual ACM Conference held at the Vancouver Convention Centre

My work has all Dells ... but I got an IBM for personal use so it was neat to see that all these software architects had IBMs (I noticed all 9 cell batteries, though I have the 6 cell). I also love to mod computers which no one at work seems to understand, haha.

Actually that conference is great to stay on top of things if you are in the software development field and enjoy a lecture or two.

Did you ever exchange your laptop? I read somewhere you had a dead pixel.

Yeah, I finally got a new one, because the other one had a dead pixel, and then died.

Now my replacement has a dead pixel. I can't really afford to be without a computer for 2 weeks again, but I seem to be in the process of working something out with IBM.

Everything else about this one is perfect, besides the pixel. The keyboard is Thai, the battery is very tight, and there are no video driver issues.

Depending on the next one, I may end up keeping this one anyway.

We'll see. :D

I just got the my ScreensaveRz today. When I opened the little tube, I initially was not very impressed at all. It just seemed like a cheap little piece of thin cloth, cut into a square... Don't ask me what I was expecting... :P

Anyhow, it's black, which is a nice match for the ThinkPad, and the fit is great.

When I used it to clean the screen however, I was quite impressed. It's a neat material, that wonderfully cleans the screen to immaculate condition. It feels quite strong, and is washable.

For 18 bucks shipped, which seems a little steep, I would still buy it again. The comfort of the extra step of protection for the screen is worth it.

So, I recommend them. It's a simple and great little addition for you more paranoid users. :D

Plinkerton, where are you from?

I ordered before you from Canada and still have not got it yet. No word or order confirmation on my Booq sleeve either.

Southern California.

I guess it just takes longer for you. My Booq order a while ago was pretty quick too.

I didn't realize that you hadn't received yours yet. When mine came today, i was thinking about what you thought about yours.

That's too bad. It's pretty cool though, so at least you know you'll enjoy it. :D

The Booq sleeve is great by the way, but I'm sure you already know that.

I ordered a Screensaver from radtech and it arrived here in NZ 6 days later (just got it this past Wednesday actually), but then we have really lax customs laws (they don't open anything). Being Canadian, I'm all too familiar with CDN Customs rifling through things at random.

My shipping cost US$4.50! But totally worth it. With a slight bit of trimming, my all black one (just like Plink's!) fits the X40 wonderfully. Highly recommended.

Just ordered one of these - figured I just got a nearly $4,000 laptop, I ought to try and keep it decent. :-)

Does the T42 keyboard touch the display when closed? It's the only reason I can think of to get the Radtech screen saver.

Dunno, but, I'm getting one anyway just in case. :-) Figure I can always use it as a polishing cloth. I have a 20" Dell 2001FP LCD on my desktop machine!

It works amazingly as a polishing cloth.

As for the keyboard touching the screen, it doesn't seem to that much, but the TrackPoint definitely does on mine. I can always see a little circle made up of little dots from the nubs on the trackpoint.

I just wanted one anyway. I figured if there is hard plastic that close to the screen, I want something in between it, as I carry my TP in my backpack often, with books stacked against it.

rocketman, I think it would be a good investment to have some sort of screen protection or to at least get a microfibre cloth of some sort for general maintenance.

A few guys at work recommended I get something to keep the grease off my T41 LCD screen which is why I was looking for a ScreenSaverz type of product. They have Macs which have the problem with keys touching the LCD screen, but I guess over time dirt and grease will accumulate on the keyboard so it's a good precaution regardless of the laptop you have. The guys who have Dells don't really care about their screen too much, but I guess they didn't get a Dell for aesthetics.

I know if you were to close your T4x laptop and put pressure on the LCD cover you could pick up grease and grime off of your keyboard.

I'm in Vancouver and I haven't been too happy with shipping times from the USA unless it's tracked. Not sure how "Free Trade" ever benefitted the average consumer.

I'm still waiting on an item that was shipped to me 5 weeks ago via USPS and it's still not here :(

I bet the Booq and Radtech products were shipped USPS as well and it's already been 2 weeks :(

Hopefully I'll get my accessories next week :) There is always hope I guess, lol.

Too bad I don't have a mailing address in the USA, otherwise I'd be in techie heaven. I wonder if there are any services that would hold stuff in Washington then I could just cross the border to pick it up.

I got both items today :) Didn't even get charged extra duty.

I really like the fit of the Booq powersleeve. Gives me the freedom to be ultra-portable. It actually even matches my laptop backpack.

The Radtech product is also nice too. Plinkerton, did you use that alcohol wipe on your screen? Not sure if I should since it says 70% alcohol but the forum recommends 50%.

hiengu, I never got the chance too. As I read thru the instructions, I read "that's why we include an alcohol wipe..." What alcohol wipe? I didn't see one.

They forgot mine... :?

But other than that, the RadTech is still great, and so is my Powersleeve.
