WOOO HOO!!! It's here !!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by daeojkim » Tue Oct 19, 2004 9:04 pm

OK i received my new T42. It arrived at work this morning. I spent all day playing with it at work. Didn't care if I was not getting my work done. The quikcer I get used to using this laptop the more efficient I will be with my work. (Yeah Yeah.. i just wanted to play with it)

I am happy. Everythins works perfect. No dead pixels. The SXGA+ screen is amazingly bright. The vertical and horizontal views are very very good. no complaints here.

Keyboard is probably one of the best keyboards I ever used. Very good.
All my coworkers came to see my new laptop. One of them is waiting for his.
Somehow mine arrived earlier than his even though he ordered a day before I did. Odd.

Anyways... Wooo HOOO.. I am so happy.

I miis the windows key however.

Got the 2378 FVU.
I mainly got for the 14.1 SXGA+ and Radeon9600.
Only 4.5 lb. 40GB is just fine for me since I use my old desktop as file server for larger files.

For this was the perfect combo for the price.

Sweet, I got the same model (2378FVU) today too. I am just lovin' it totally. The price certainly was great. I am amazed and how thin and light the notebook is for such a capable machine. Now just have to get Suse or Fedora setup on it so I can escape from Winders and stupid Visual Studio .Net. :)

Congrats daeojkim. I just received my second 2378-FVU, same specs as yours, as my first one spontaneously died.

Good to hear you have no stuck pixels. I had one on my first one, and my replacement has one also. I'm not going to return it though, as I can't be without a computer for ANOTHER 2 weeks. It was hard enough the first time.

If you want to read the sad tale of my misery, check out the "IT CAME IT CAME!" Thread. The title of your thread reminded me of the happy day I once shared with you... Then, it slowly dwindled into dissapointment.. :D

Haha, I'm just messin around. Good luck with yours. I love this computer.

I just ordered my first Thinkpad this afternoon and it is the same model as you guys, 2378-FVU. I am pretty stoked about my purchase and seeing you guys' comments makes me feel even better. Daeojkim, keep us updated to how you like your notebook. I would be interested to here more. I hope I don't get any dead or stuck pixels like you did! :D

OK everything so far is working very well for me.
I made recovery disks and tested wireless connection and all is working fine for me so far.

I will have to upgrade the RAM. Adding another 512MB soon. The 256MB that it comes with slows the computer down a lot. It uses too much virtual memory.

The HD is extremely quiet. Actually I can't even hear it. Occasionally I would hear the fan, but nothing that I really notice. I am falling more and more in love with the feel of the keyboard. The built quality is very good. It is not the prettiest notebook like sony, but it feels a lot better built to last a very long time.

Yesterday I was using my laptop on my lap while I was watching the entire Red Sox - Yankee game. The battery lasted about 3.5 hours. Pretty impressive. And it did not get hot at all, just a luke warm feel.

Divinity, you will just love it when you get receive it. It's so nice so nice.

One thing that I miss is the windows key.

I went to Barnes and Noble today and got a cup of coffee and sat down and began doing some work. Having a notebook is definitely a plus. And the SXGA+ resolution makes a lot easier to use multiple windows.

I could go on all night praising this laptop but I will have to stop here.. gotta watch the NLCS...

Go to START>ALLPROGRAMS>ACCESS IBM>KEYBOARD CUSTOMIZER UTILITY.

Set the right or left ALT key (or whatever other key you can select) as a windows key. After that, you won't miss it anymore!

I actually love the looks of this notebook. It's just no nonsense black, utilitarian workhorse. It's awesome.

About the aesthetics, black might not be in, but it's also never out. Sure, a Sony might be prettier now. But, IBM has been stellar about being consistent in the look of their notebooks for many years and anyone who knows anything knows an IBM is a great notebook. Even if others might not like the looks, they certainly respect the quality and everyone knows when someone carries in an IBM notebook just from glancing at it from a distance.

Yes you are absolutely correct. I am thinking that after using this for 3 years it will look just as good and new and it won't feel old because the new thinkpads 3 years from now are going to look pretty much the same.. ^^

Plinkerton, thanks for the tip. Now I won't miss the windows key...

 got the SAME model t42 in yesterday, it's great!

i went from an x40 (1.2ghz) to this, i tried the x40 for ~30 days but i couldn't deal w/ the slower proc. and hd .. i'd bought 2 of these models a month ago for 2 partners at my work, so i knew i would love it. the 2 i bought before both had 1 deal pixel, mine has none. the x40 i returned had 1 dead pixel too, i was starting to think i was cursed.

congrat's man, take care of 'er

PS: just adding to the sub-discussion, i personally LOVE the simple black design that all IBM lpt.'s have .. it's kind of an elegant nonchalance, saying perfection in a box doesn't need a flashy case. :o

Seriously, about the looks, I would choose a ThinkPad over the flashyness of an AlienWare, an Acer Ferarri, or any Sony out there. I was happy that the notebook I wanted came in flat, boxy black.

That's a good point about their notebooks looking the same a few years down the line. :D

Since were saying so many great things about the ThinkPad, I want to add that I LOVE the UltraNav interface. I use the usually overlooked TrackPoint more than the touch pad.

These are rockin' notebooks. :D

I too am a big fan of the TrackPoint. My last notebook only had a touchpad and I despised it. Before that I had an IBM Thinkpad 760ED for many years and had come to love the Trackpoint. Being without it for years was terribly upsetting. I really don't understand why people like the touchpad. Maybe it would be nice to have sometimes, but if I had to pick I would take the TrackPoint everytime. I actually wish IBM hadn't included the touchpad as it somehow seems oddly in the way with it being on the lower edge of the notebook like that. I disabled it, but I still wish it was just a smooth surface down there.

Nick, I too was debating over whether to get the X40 or the T42! I thought the sheer chic appeal would make it worth having an X40. But when I set down and really thought about how much time I would spend on my new Thinkpad and all the stuff I wanted to run on it then the X40 just started to make less and less sense. I think someone who would be traveling 3-4 days out of the week and who had a nice desktop to come home to would be a perfect candidate for an X40. Me, I am glad that I went with the T42, as long as I don't get any dead or stuck pixels :? !

ifeagan, there is a thread around here somewhere about adding a palmrest that gets rid of the touchpad, and replaces it with a smooth palmrest. I don't remember how hard it was to find one of these things, but it may be simple and cheap. maybe something you'd look into.
