IBM Announces New T42p; Fingerprint Reader T42s Online

#1 Post by rickslate » Wed Oct 20, 2004 3:40 pm

Alongside its announcement of the new ThinkPad G41, IBM took the lid off a new T42p. Unfortunately, I believe it starts at $3,999...
  • IBM announced today new models of the IBM ThinkPad T42p mobile workstation with Intel's 2.1 GHz Pentium M processor and new 855MP chipset. The ThinkPad T42p includes an enhanced version of IBM's Access Connections tool, Version 3.4. This enhanced version supports additional PC adapters as well as increased compatibility with wireless security standards, providing users simplified access to secure wireless connectivity. Coupled with an optional extended battery of up to 7.5 hours, the ThinkPad T42p offers robust security, manageability and processing power. Select models of the ThinkPad T42p will include fingerprint readers that work in tandem with IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem and Client Security Software to offer industry-leading computing security and data protection.
The full press release is available here. Not sure if this has been posted before.

A new pimp T42 is also on sale at IBM's site for $4,379. They also have T42s with the embedded fingerprint reader (according to the spec sheet) at $2,079 and $2,449.

To comment on Skanky's post:

My new T42 replacement (my first one died), has a battery that is SIGNIFICANTLY tighter than the first one. That, plus an incuded Thai keyboard was a nice plus.

Hi, my first post, been reading the forums for quite some time, though. Great material, advice and people.
In fact, you guys make the IBM's sound so good, I ordered a T42p(2373HTU) last week and have been drooling ever since!
After speaking with Customer Service today and being bummed that mine is on backorder for 3 weeks, and getting longer every day, I came accross this info on the 2373Q1U.
Do you think it would be unreasonable or unsound for me to cancel my current order and place one for the newer system? Would IBM be ok with it? I'm getting the EPP price, so I would end up paying a couple hundred extra for the fingerprint scanner (Way up there on the Coolness Scale) and the 765 processor(the only differences I could see). Do you think it is worth it?

I'd definitely cancel my order if I placed one last week. I've been looking to purchase a 1.8GhZ 15" SXGA+ T42 for over a month. It appears that they just dropped the price on that computer under the "Let me Build it" option today and if I customize the new $2,449 1.8GhZ model IBM just introduced, it comes out even cheaper with better (really cheap) on-site service (To see that option, you have to go to the main T-Series page, click View All Models, and then select the Pentium M 745 series in the drop-down box). They also have a 512MB special upgrade today for $99 so yeah, I'd cancel and re-order. Then again, you might want to wait for the input of people smarter than me when it comes to IBMs.

I ordered the T42 model #2379R9U with the finger print reader. I'm patiently waiting for its delivery.

Wonder what happened to the Pentium M 755? Replaced by the 765, clearly. I guess they felt there wasn't any reason to have both in the product line?
