Nushield = xbrite screen?

#1 Post by pufftissue » Thu Oct 21, 2004 2:44 am

So I've been lurking on notebook forums and one of the recent rages were the nushield screen protectors. I haven't been able to get a straight answer, but :

I quote: It's kind of funny how computer manufactures will advertise something like xbrite or "glossy lcds" for hundreds when i just pay 15 for the same thing. There is substantial glare though. I will try to use the laptop outside tomorrow on the quad and see if it is possible. But even indoors, as I'm typing, I can see the reflection of my fingers type. Or while playing a game, I'll see my reflection in the screen in dark rooms. "

link: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.ph ... t=nushield

if it doesn't work, go to www.notebookforums.com and search for "nushield"

There are pics and everything.

Do not type in "nutshield" on google like i did. O/w you will get: www.nutshield.com
worth a laugh i guess

1. Who has this on their thinkpad 14.1" screen, or any screen?
2. Does this $15-20 solution = xbrite technology? It seems that the original poster of the thread believes it is. And his credibility is that he's the moderator of the forums.

Oh, I'm too lazy to look it up, but if you go to sonystyle.com and check out their vaio notebook xbrite technology, they pretty much tell you that it's some type of film as well. But I'm not sure if there is actually more light being produced by the LCD screens in this x-brite technology or if it's 100% due to the glossy film. Honestly, I felt on my own looking at fry's today that the x-brite screen are definitely classy, but is the underlying brightness higher than my t41's brightness? I vote no because making a screen truly this bright would have to decrease the battery life a lot. But the x-brite screens don't, so I think it's all due to the special film effect.

Anyone up for this?

I purchased the film for the 600x. It was closed to a Panasonic notebook. I show the email below:

Harry,

We have an excellent solution for you. The films that fit the Panasonic
Toughbook CF-28 will very likely work on your ThinkPad. You can find it
here:

http://www.nushield.com/products_business_panasonic.htm

If you decide to try this, you will be covered by our 100% money back
guarantee (including shipping charges). We would greatly appreciate
hearing from you no matter what the outcome so we can let others know
of your experience. Please let us know if we can be of further
assistance.

So how can I refuse?

It was under $20.00!

pufftissue,

I am up on it! Not only does it intensify the brightness and clarity but it is used as a screen protector for chemicals! If it even close to the X-brite; I will have the state of the art LCD screen. I will tell everyone what I found out when I install and view it for like a week and then go and see if I can work on the Dell 700m that a firend has or a Sony Vais? with X-Brite from a retail store!

Kind of excited!

Thanks puffissue!

Harry

I find these Sony screens absolutely terrible. Sure, at first glance they look terrific, but I can't stand these horrible reflections, as it has already been quoted in this thread: "But even indoors, as I'm typing, I can see the reflection of my fingers type. Or while playing a game, I'll see my reflection in the screen in dark rooms." After all, it's nothing more than an optical trick. For a good reason the screens on ThinkPads do have an anti-reflective coating. IBM could leave it away, too, but for what purpose? ThinkPads are intended to be used as computers and not mirrors. OK, perhaps with the exception of some very special models for the Asian market (S3* and X3*-Series), which had a piano varnish finishing on the back of the display lid:

Not really. A simple film will by no means increase the luminosity of the panel, but rather reduce it a bit (though just insignificantly).

Someone should tell them they applied the Nushield to the wrong side of the display  :D

Yeah, and what are those "handles" sticking out on either side?

Does the stuff come off easily, without damaging the LCD?

If not, I personally wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole...

Thanks! Wow, I think my shift key is bigger than that space bar!

I remember the 701 - the butterfly keyboard was ingenious.

Yeah, and if it doesn't (which I strongly suppose), I'd really be interested in what IBM says about it WRT to warranty issues...
