How to increase fonts, text and menu bar items

#1 Post by nikemen » Thu Oct 21, 2004 6:52 pm

So, after having gotten new 15" T42's for my folks, SVGA models, I had to do some reconfiguring to get them to be able to see things better. XGA might have been a better choice, and cheaper, but I just couldn't bring myself to buying 1028 screens again. I know my next one will be SVGA.

Regardless, I have a nice THEME now created for them, larger screen fonts, JUMBO icons, larger menu, title, drop down fonts. Using CLEAR TYPE looks pretty nice, actually nicer than I thought.

A point comes to note though which I don't know how to address. How can one get the ICONS in the MENU and TASK bar to be larger? Those puppies are TINY.

As well, in some windows, like Controll Panel for instance, the large menu of items on the left side, doesn't seem to be changeable by any of the items I have tried. Can someone point me in the right direction.

A final point. In mozilla for example, I like to do CNTRL and + key to increase the font size for the page, one step. Is there a way to do this as the default? Everytime I got to a new site, or open anew, boom we are back to where we started.

thanks for the pointers.

Hmm, you're in WinXP so things may be different but here's how to resize some icons in Win2000...

To increase the size of the tiny icons in the QUICKLAUNCH bar, you just right click anywhere over the bar and a menu appears, hover over 'View', and select 'Large Icons'.

To increase the size of the icons on the main START MENU, right click underneath the Start button and select 'Properties'. Uncheck 'Show small icons in the Start Menu'.

To increase the size of icons in folder windows, select 'View' and select 'Large Icons'. Then click 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'View' tab, and select the option to display all folders like the current folder.

Don't know how to change how the main taskbar options are sized. If you're customizing themes then you probably already knew this though. Not sure if I answered your question. I know XP does some funky thinks in displaying folders.

In desktop properties, goto Appearance and then Advanced. All that stuff should be there. Icons in the start menu though, that might be there but I'm not sure.

For the main taskbar, it's "Active title window"

Some other things I have tried are more global. Raise the DPI overall in windows. Go to Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, General, and in Display box change DPI setting to Large Size (120DPI). You can override the font sizes in Explorer by going to Internet Properties, General tab, click on Accessibility and click "ignore font sizes specified on Web Pages" Adjust your other stuff to taste. And don't forget about the FN and Spacebar combination for stuff you still can't read. Gives you a temporary increase in detail on the page your looking at.
