Consistant Heatsink Problems - Where to buy new?

#1 Post by fanisdead » Tue Jul 24, 2007 5:12 pm

So my heatsink fan died in May and I got it replaced (refurbed on ebay). A few days ago, my heatsink died again. I bought another used one on ebay and that worked for roughly 7 hours before dying again.

Is this a case of bad luck or something more serious? If its just bad luck I'm set on buying a new, rather than old heatsink. Any good places online where I can make the order? I have the long version and so far havent found any good websites.

Suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance.

You know from the description you posted, the time frame and the amount of fans I am starting to think that your machine has other problems as well.

Are you over-clocking? What CPU do you have?

Actually what model T4x do you have? Some more hardware info is required in order to help you troubleshoot your problem.

Although based upon the limited information posted so far I am thinking you might have a planar board problem. That is simply to many HSF's dying in a relatively short amount of time to simply write off as fan failure.

Also when replacing the HSF's did you smear some thermal paste on the CPU die or just install the HSF bare?

Thanks for the reply. My computer specs are in my signature.

I'm not over-clocking my CPU. Using mobilemeter my cpu runs around 52C idle and can get up to the mid 80s while gaming. My CPU is running on adaptive mode.

My last heatsink ran fine from May to late July. This last one died however in less than one day. Worked fine after I booted it up, did some work, then shut it down. Next morning I had "fan error" when I turned the power on.

What is planar board problems?

As for thermal gel I'm using arctic silver. I put a pinpoint drop on the cpu and i carefully smear it across.

I've put wayyyy too much money in this comp. My sxga lcd died a few months ago and I replaced that (at a nice cost of $300) I'm thinking of just ditching this comp and buying a new one.

Ok then, so much for the simple ideas.

What fan are you purchasing? For a 64MB Radeon I would use the M10 long fan. You can purchase the fan brand new from Lenovo I believe.

Re: The 1 day fan. This was most likely a bad fan. It may have tested good by the seller if they only applied power for a few minutes to make sure it spun up.

Planar board = IBM speak for motherboard.

It is good to know that you are using Arctic Silver. I used that when I upgraded my CPU to a 2.0GHz Dothan and haven't had any problems so far.

I was thinking that you might be experiencing some voltage irregularities because of the amount of fans you appear to be going through.

It's your call as to what to do next. Here is what I would suggest though.

Track down a brand new fan and see if that fixes the problem.

If not

Sell the unit (either here in the marketplace or e-bay, craigscam, etc) and use the money to help with the purchase of a newer unit.
