T40 Screen vs. 600X Screen
T40 Screen vs. 600X Screen
Hi,
A bit of an unusual question here - I just re-freshed my old 600X yesterday with a brand new screen and keyboard and compared the new LCD panel to my current workhorse - a T40 with a brand new screen (3 months old) as well. While I didn't expect the two screens to be exactly the same, I was surprised at how yellow and dim the new 600X screen looked in comparison. Was this always the case or could there be a problem with the LCD inverter on the 600X? The inverter is the original unit as far as I know. Does an old inverter cause the screen output to dim? I bought a 600E brand new many years ago and remember the screen was bright right out of the box. Has LCD technology improved much since the 600X?
BTW, the T40 I had was suffering from the dreaded screen freeze when moved but the Post It pad solution has worked like a charm and I haven't shut down for over a day now. A few days ago, I was freezing up 3 to 5 times a day. I started with a conservatively sized pad and kept on adding a few pieces at a time until the lock ups went away.

It's possible that the inverter's output is a little weak. Could also be possible that there's a problem with the backlight (CCFL) in the new panel or even a film of dirt/grease/smoke residue/etc on the screen. If the panel is not exactly the same as the original, then the backlight may not be matched to the inverter. BTW, is it really new or used/refurbished?

Hi, it is a brand new screen that had the factory plastic seal still on.rkawakami wrote:It's possible that the inverter's output is a little weak. Not the same brand though but the configuration is exactly the same in terms of the connectors and attachments for 600X. One thing I noticed is that the new screen is not a BIG improvement over the old screen (as you would expect) which was used for at least 3-4 years. The new screen still has the yellowish tint which makes all the colors look washed out and "warm" and white backgrounds still have a dark quality/yellowish pall that is no fun to look at...
One more thing - I just compared the 600X with the new screen to an old T30 with no mods. The T30, which I retired because of a dark screen, is about 5 years old or so and is almost as dim as the 600X but has a reddish tint which I take as a failing back light. The 600X despite being dim, has a more bluish tint in comparison. I hope this means that the problem is not with the back light....
I retired a 600E for a T40 four years ago. While the T40 was better, the 600E was by no means unsatisfactory (as you appear to be describing).
Sounds like something's not right with your 600E.

My 600x screen colors are warmer than my T42 screen colors, which your eye adjusts to, and also richer and more saturated than my T42 screen colors. The T42 video card (Radeon 9600) offers no saturation control. I tried to achieve the 600x look on the T42 by adjusting gamma (0.75) which didn't help much.
My 600x screen is beautiful.

What could be the problem?
Good to hear that I am not imaging things when I thought my new 600X screen was performing sub-par. The image I am getting is great - everything is sharp with good contrast. The only problem is that the brightness level is only about 50% of my T40's new screen and is a strain on my eyes. Since I sure the screen is brand new, should I change out the LCD inverter? Does a fading LCD inverter result in a dim screen? My one experience with a bad inverter resulted in a completely dark screen so I didn't know that a bad inverter could be putting out less voltage.
