Stain on screen
Stain on screen
I bought a T42 off ebay (UK) a couple of months ago, and after a couple of weeks I noticed a 'stain' on the screen (14"): looks like an weak oil stain of about half inch diameter. The stain is not due to any mark on the black covering screen, but must due to the LCD unit itself. It's not a big issue (it took me a while to notice it!), but I'm wondering of there is anything I could do to get rid of it. I thought I could upload an image, but it's too complicated.

ewwwww
LOL
Ok enough of that for now.... i guess all you can probably do is disassemble the LCD and wipe down the actual screen and see if that helps.

Yes, I was afraid that the disassembling was the only real option. But I'll wait a while as I'm not too confident of doing it myself - changing a keyboard is about my limit! I'll wait until the warranty runs out next year, and its market value had dropped, then I might have a go. But thanks for clarifying it.

Hello Robert:
You might want to take a closer look and see if the stain that you refer to is caused by the red rubber TrackPoint button pressing against the screen. Just slowly close the screen and see if the stain lines up with the TrackPoint cap.
Knowing how the stain got there won't remove it, but at least you'll know what has caused it...

No, it's certainly not the track button - the stain lines up more with the LH trackpad red button. Also, the stain is not a mark on the screen - when switched off, the black screen is all mat-shinny and completely unmarked. The problem must be on the LCD display itself, i.e. what the black screen protects.

Update: rang IBM today, and they would have a look at the fault to see if it would be covered under my 'Limited Warranty'. If it was then they'd repair it; if not, then I could have it repaired with a basic standing starting charge of around 180 UK pounds plus parts, etc; but if I wanted them to return the T42 as it is, then I would have to pay 60 UK pounds to get it back.
So as the warranty runs to the end of 2008, I'll sit on that!
