power cord won't stay in T42

#1 Post by gblandon » Wed Jul 25, 2007 5:13 pm

So something is wrong with my power jack (that is to say, the yellow hole where the power cord plugs into). The cord just won't stay in; the slightest movement and it pops out. It's getting VERY annoying. I have no idea where to get (or what the part number would be) or how to replace the jack. Help!

I believe that the T42 DC jack plugs into the motherboard and is secured by a screw so that it is easily replaceable. Well, at least it is when you get the keyboard, palmrest, keyboard bezel and modem card removed.

Where to get one could be here in the Marketplace or on eBay.

How to replace one would be detailed in the T4x Hardware Maintenance Manual.

You actually need to take the motherboard out of the case and then remove the rear frame. Then it is held on by one screw and is easy to replace.

Ah, okay, thanks. I was looking at a couple of T41 bases last night, saw how the DC jack was plugged into the motherboard so I thought that you could slide the jack out without too much trouble.

Maybe carbon_unit's paperclip trick will help you; it worked for me, after I hit the bended end of the paperclip with a hammer to make it flat:

Good luck!

If you're feeling adventurous, you could try making a magnetic power adapter like on a MacBook. It's non destructive apparently...

Hi,

I had the EXACT same problem as you for the longest time. My brother ran into my cord one day and ripped it out of the laptop. Since then every time I moved my laptop it would beep saying it lost power. I used to always thing it was the motherboard until I tried another AC Adapter and it worked fine. IBM ended up replacing it under warranty. Have you tried your AC adapter in other machines, or other AC Adapters in your machine?
