14.1 SXGA/XGA- Is LCD panel different or just Graphics Card?

#1 Post by Grumpy » Fri Oct 22, 2004 12:30 pm

I may be confused. I thought all T series 14.1 TFT displays were 14.1 TFT dispslays and that whether the display was rated SXGA (1400 x 1050) or XGA (1024 x 768) was a function of which graphics card was installed.

However now I discovered a Radeon 9000 card listed in both the 23739FU and the 23795VU, but one is rated at SXGA and the other XGA.

Are there actual differences in the quality of the 14.1 LCD panels as well as the graphics adapters? If so is the higher res panel significantly clearer than the other when used at the same resolution? (I assume you could configure each at 1024 x 768 if you wished).

I do not believe that there would be a difference in display quality between different LCD panels if one were made for 1400x1050 and 1024x768. If there are any differences between general display quality it would be due to the differences between 2 seperate manufacturers as well as the build qualities of the same panel from the same manufacturer; just as an automotive manufacturer might build 100,000 units of the same engine but having some engines being slightly more or less powerful (.4 Horsepower) than others.

As far as having a 1400x1050 Native resolution panel running 1024x768 and comparing that to the display quality of a 1024x768 native resolution panel running at its own resolution, you would see a much better picture on the 1024x768 native resolution panel.

Most LCD panels are categorized by not only ther physical size, 13.3, 14.1, 15 and what have you but also by their native resolution. The reason native resolution is so important is that the display quality will look significantly better if it is running at its designed native resolution. Just as well, you will not find a monitor that has a native resolution that is lower of its maximum resolution, ie. a 1400x1050 native resolution LCD being able to run 1600x1200.

Now the reason why a 1024x768 N.R. panel would look significantly better when being compared to a 1400x1050 N.R. panel running 1024x768 is that the 1400x1050 panel would be due to LCD Pixel Dithering. I do not believe that I would be able to accurately explain this but this link does a pretty good job of doing so.

I might be incorrect in some of my explanation so if there are errors, please correct me.

Nacy333, thanks for the excellent reply and reference. It's obvious I need to bone up on my display technology (there really IS something besides CRT's!)

I guess about the only decision then, is what size image you want to be presented with in native mode. I did try changing my old 13" TP600 from 1024 x 768 and sure enough all it did is put a black boarder around it. That res works for me so no sense shooting for higher even with an inch bigger screen. I suspect on a 15", SXGA would please me more.
