Windows Update Dilemma

#1 Post by Mohsen » Sat Oct 23, 2004 2:55 pm

************************
I am facing problem with Windows Update, I contacted Microsoft and here is what they suggested, but nothing helped me. Can someone help me please?
************************

Problem Description: I have just bought my new laptop from IBM; it is ThinkPad T41 with Windows XP installed already on it. I wanted to update its OS so I went to Automatic update! The system asked to download a couple of small programs and I did installed them. When I finished that I suppose to get the UPDATES. I begin to download the first update but it stopped and then disconnected. I tried for three times but without success. I have a dial-up at 44kbps speed. Can I know what was the problem? And how to fix it? I contacted Microsoft and here are their suggestions and nothing has helped me.

Suggestion 1

Reconfigure or update your firewall program so that Windows Update is not blocked, and then try to update your computer again by using Windows Update. For information about how to reconfigure or update your firewall program, see the documentation that was included with the program, view the Help files for your program, or contact the manufacturer's technical support department.

(!) Did not solve my problem
I don't have firewall on my system. As you may already know from my first email that it is a brand new IBM ThinkPad laptop. I did search for any firewall but I could not find any. So, I thought it might be the Win XP itself. I went to the tools and I added the "Update Windows" web site to the trusted sites.

Suggestion 2

Remove Windows Update entries from the HOSTS file
To remove Windows Update entries from the HOSTS file, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad
2. On the File menu, click Open.
3. In the Files of type box, click All Files.
4. In the Look in box, locate the following folder:
C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc5. Double-click to open the hosts file.
6. Remove any lines that contain entries for Windows Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com).
7. On the File menu, click Save.
8. Close Notepad.

(!) Did not solve my problem
I found the HOSTS file but I found nothing about windows update so I left it as it is.

Suggestion 3

Run the IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS command
To run the ipconfig /flushdns command, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and the click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /flushdns
4. Close the command window.

(!) Did not solve my problem
I did that but I am still encountering this error :0x80072EE2

Please download and install the latest Windows Scripting Engine from the following
page and test the issue:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx? FamilyId=0A8A18F6-249C-4A72-BFCF-FC
6AF26DC390&displaylang=en

I select the link you provide, I got empty page saying "the selected download is not available". So, I searched for the key words (Windows, Scripting, and Engine) in the download center but did not find this engine.

B. Restore IE settings
================
1. Quit all Internet Explorer windows. Double-click Internet Options in Control
Panel. (You can also right-click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop and
click Properties.)
2. Click the "Security" tab.
3. In the list box, highlight the "Internet" icon and then click the "Default
Level" button. Repeat this step to set "Local intranet", "Trusted sites" and
"Restricted sites" to default level (if you find the "Default Level" button is
grayed out, please let it be).
4. Click the "Privacy" tab. Click the "Default" button (if the button is grayed
out, let it be).
5. Click the "Advanced" tab.
6. Click the "Restore Defaults" button.
7. Click Apply and click OK.
C. Temporarily disable all antivirus and firewall programs.

I did all of those steps. I have no firewall program what I have is only Norton Antivirus and I could not close that program (I don't know how, I tried but it did not) but I disable its auto-protect function although I still see its icon in the taskbar with a 'x' mark on it meaning it is not functioning.

Remove all Windows Update controls
==============================
1. Quit all Internet Explorer windows.
2. Open Control Panel and double-click on the "Internet Options" icon.
3. Click the "General" tab, click "Clear History" in the History area, and then
click OK in the dialog box that appears.
4. In the "Temporary Internet Files" area, click "Delete Files" button, check
"Delete all offline content" and then click OK in the dialog box that appears.
5. In the "Temporary Internet Files" area, click "Settings", and then click "View
Objects" in the dialog box that appears. This will open the Downloaded Program Files folder.
6. Delete all the object files.
7. Click Start, then click Control Panel, and then click Folder Options.
8. Click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders."
9. To display other hidden files, clear the "Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)" check box.
10. Go to the C:\Program Files\Windows Update folder.
11. Highlight the V4 folder. Click Edit from the main menu, and then click Invert
Selection. (If you cannot locate the V4 folder, skip this step. Continue to delete
the rest of the files by choosing Select All instead of Invert Selection.)
12. Once all of the other files are highlighted, press Delete on the keyboard to
delete these files.
13. Next, delete all the folders and files in the V4 directory except the file
named iuhist.xml. Highlight the "iuhist.xml" file, then click Edit from the main
menu, and click Invert Selection.
14. Once the other files are highlighted, press the Delete key on the keyboard.
15. Click Start, then click Search, and then click For Files or Folders. Search for
the files named iuctl.dll.
16. Delete any other copies of these files from any other folder except from the
folder C:\Windows\System.
17. After you have deleted all other copies of these files, delete them from the
"C:\Windows\System" folder.
18. Search and delete the iuengine.dll file.
19. Return to the Windows Update Site to have the Web site install new copies of
the ActiveX controls and test the issue again.

Here, I did all the steps from 1-9 successfully. For steps 10: I went to the Windows Update folder and I found nothing there; it is an empty folder. I wonder why there are no files but I think because of previous steps to resolve this problem from my previous case...I don't why but there is nothing there so I left as it is. Therefore, I could not complete steps # 11 and 12. For steps 13, because nothing in that folder, I searched for the "iuhist.xml" but I could not find it.

Step 15,16: I found "iuctl.dl" file only in Windoes/system32 folder and not in Windoes/sysem folder so I deleted it anyway. However, I have noticed that whenever I delete this file even from the recycle and I search for it again...I find coming back.

Step 18: I found the file "iuengine.dll " in windows/system32, I deleted it but it appears whenever I search for it again.

Step 19: I went back to the Windows Update page and I recieved an error later that there is missing object! Here, I decided to restart my system and when I went back to the update page, I did not get that error again but but...but the updates files did...not...install. I found two recommended updates; KB828741 & KB835732 but they ...failed to be downloaded

Suggestion 7

On a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer, this problem occurs if you do either of the following actions:
• You reinstall the original released version of Windows XP.
• You use System Restore to restore your computer to a date before Service Pack 1 was installed.
To resolve this problem, re-install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or install any Service Pack that is later than Service Pack 1.

4. In the right pane, double-click CSDVersion.
5. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, under Value data, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
6. On the File menu, click Exit.
7. Restart your computer, and then visit the Windows Update Web site to try to update Windows again.

Can you go somewhere with a high-speed internet connection? It may be that your connection is dropping out during the download.

Windows default for a dial-up connection is to disconnect after 20 min ...not sure if you're surfin,if it would disconnect, but from previous experience,if it it just downloading,it will disconnect after 20 min....and seeing as you are downloading a SP by dial up,it would prob take about an hour or more to download,,,therefore going over the 20 min....

Go to control panel>network connections>right click on your dial up connection,go to Properties, click the Options Tab at the top,set the Idle Time Before Hanging Up to NEVER

Hope this helps....
